This week we have another installment in our occasional series highlighting members of Mary Magdalene who join us from beyond the Rochester area. Meet Kay & Jan and Jorge!
Kay Quinlan and Jan Mines hail from Chicagoland. They are cradle Catholics, and have been together for 43 years. Kay’s background includes 8 years in religious life (as Sister Jonah), working for the Cana Conference, and 25 years as a library manager. Her favorite spiritual read is Rilke’s Book of Hours, and she also writes poetry herself! She says, “I am mad for dogs, birds, and humans in general.” Jan felt a calling to be an educator, and taught elementary, middle, and high school, before serving as a faculty member, dean, and assistant provost at Lewis University, a Lasallian/Catholic university in Illinois. She is an affiliated member of the Lasallian Christian Brothers and continues to work with Lasallians around the world. They share: “As livestream members […] we have applauded Tammy for her successful rummage sale, sung along with the choir, and have relished the philosophy of inclusion and social justice and the welcoming warmth of the parish. It is a soul filling experience to join you weekly for the homilies of Rev. Celie and Deacon Betty, truly our benediction. We never fail to leave with something new to ponder. Best of all we are able to join you in the holy experience of the Eucharist. After the experience of Mary Magdalene parish, we can only repeat the words of St. Peter to Jesus: “Where else would we go, Lord. You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).
Jorge Saavedra joined Mary Magdalene in 2018. After many years in Walworth, he now joins us mostly virtually from Conquest, NY (in Cayuga County near Port Byron). Jorge learned of Mary Magdalene through working with Phil Donato, husband of Mary Magdalene founder Bishop Denise, at RG&E. Although the Catholic faith had been a strong part of his life and Puerto Rican heritage, he was searching for a “breath of fresh air” in Catholicism, and found it here. “I fell in love with the community on my first visit,” he shares, adding that he values being part of a religious community that is unapologetically progressive. Jorge is a history buff and a collector of recipes, and cherishes a sojourn at the beach—and break from the snow— in North Carolina every year.

Trans Parent Group
We call ourselves the "Trans Parent Group". We usually meet at 12 p.m. on the last Sunday of the month. In July, we will gather on Sunday, July 19th at 12 p.m. in coordination with the Pride Liturgy Mass. We’ll meet in the Gathering Space (next to the office).
We are a group of parents that are aligned with our children as we process transition. We support one another as well as our kids of all ages as we navigate the crushing opposition of society. Upcoming Community Meal
The month of July is now upon us and it’s time to remind everyone of our upcoming Community Meal which will take place on Thursday, July 30th in Fellowship Hall.
As a Church community whose mission is to welcome everyone, we will be offering a picnic supper to the residents of East Rochester. The committee is hard at work putting together a fun evening of food and friendship. Several of you have asked how the congregation as a whole can help out. We are excited that folks have offered so, here is your chance to contribute. We’d like to offer a delicious dessert that’s easy to eat and not too messy. Cupcakes would be perfect!
There will be a sign-up sheet at the front and side door this week if you would like to participate. Go to your favorite store and pick up a six-pack. Have them to Church on Sunday, July 26th. Please mark the box "Community Meal". Thank you for helping with this blessed endeavor!

Mary Magdalene Reads returns on Tuesday, August 25th at 6:30 PM. Our summer read is Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder.

VOA Hike to End Homelessness
Join us on September 13 at 10AM for a family‑friendly hike that brings our community together to raise both awareness and essential funds for neighbors experiencing homelessness. The event takes place at St. John Fisher University (3690 East Ave, Rochester). Registration is available online.

Join other peacemakers every Friday at 12 Corners in Brighton for one hour from 5-6pm. Stand with others and use your First Amendment rights for one hour! If you are at least 73 years old and take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA each year, consider donating some of those funds as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to Mary Magdalene Church and enjoy some tax savings at the same time!
Donate your returnables to our Can Shack located in our parking lot. Just bag your bottles and cans in a regular kitchen garbage bag, making sure they are empty and clean, and place them in the secure opening whenever you are here! Every bag makes a difference!
