Alachua County Schools Earn "A" Grade from State

Alachua County Public Schools has earned an ‘A’ grade based on the achievement of its students, up from a ‘B’ in 2018. Significant achievement gains among their lowest-scoring students has also helped boost the grades of four local schools that earned ‘D’s’ in 2018.

The Florida Department of Education released the 2019 school grades earlier today, and they show that the district is one of 24 statewide to earn an ‘A’ grade. They also show that the number of local schools earning a grade below a C grade has dropped from six to three.

The district’s two ‘turnaround’ schools both raised their grades this year. (Turnaround schools are those that must earn at least a ‘C’ grade within a specific time frame or face consequences imposed by the state, up to and including closure.) Metcalfe Elementary raised its grade from a ‘D’ to a ‘B,’ with exceptionally strong gains among its lowest-performing students. Terwilliger Elementary boosted its grade up to a ‘C,’ and was just six points away from earning a ‘B’ grade on a 700 point scale. Like Metcalfe, Terwilliger showed particularly strong improvements in the performance of its lowest-scoring students.

Alachua Habitat for Humanity aims to improve home affordability in Gainesville, Florida through new national advocacy campaign

Gainesville, Florida  (July 12, 2019) — Nearly 19 million households across the United States are spending at least half of their income on a place to live, often forgoing basic necessities such as food and health care to make ends meet. In Gainesville, Florida, there is currently a deficit of 18,000 housing units and the numbers are increasing. The stability that housing should bring continues to remain out of reach for many people.

On Wednesday, June 12, Alachua Habitat for Humanity joined Habitat organizations across the country to launch a new national advocacy campaign aimed at improving home affordability for 10 million people in the U.S. over the next five years.

Marking significant growth in Habitat’s commitment to ensuring that everyone has a safe and decent place to call home, the Cost of Home campaign seeks to identify and improve policies and systems through coordinated advocacy efforts at the local, state and federal levels.

Cost of Home focuses on improving housing affordability across the housing continuum in four specific policy areas: increasing supply and preservation of affordable homes, equitably increasing access to credit, optimizing land use for affordable homes, and ensuring access to and development of communities of opportunity.

Alachua Habitat for Humanity already has taken several steps toward these goals. We are currently working with the City of Gainesville and other Non-profits to explore several
Alachua Habitat for Humanity is poised to be one of the leaders in promoting new and effective policies that address affordable housing. We realize that there is more to housing than simple development, it is about creating communities of opportunity and improving quality of life for residents living in those communities.

More details about Habitat’s Cost of Home policy platform and campaign activation are available at  habitat.org/costofhome . For more information or to speak to Alachua Habitat for Humanity about the campaign, please contact Carla Lewis-Miles at clewismiles@alachuahabitat.org or 352-745-7187 and join us  @ Cypress and Grove Brewery tomorrow night at 5:30 to learn more.
