July 19, 2023

Neighbors,

Severe weather events have been in the news almost daily, including the severe flooding in Vermont, excessive heat in Southern states, and the bad air quality days due to the Canadian wildfires, to name a few. We have been very fortunate in Fairfax County, but we are not immune from natural disasters. These events are good reminders to make sure you and your family are prepared for an emergency.

The county's Office of Emergency Management strongly encourages everyone to have an emergency plan:

  • Sign up for local alerts. Knowing where to get reliable information from is critical. Register for Fairfax Alerts to receive information about traffic, weather, and other important notifications from Fairfax County.
  • Identify a shelter-in-place location in your home or business. This should be an interior room with few windows.
  • Have your family choose two places to meet in case you have to leave your home or business or are not able to return to your home:
  • One location should be right outside your home (maybe across the street), in case of a short-term emergency.
  • The second location should be away from your neighborhood (maybe at a friend's house), in case you cannot get home or you have to leave your neighborhood.
  • Create a list important supplies and documents that you will include in your "go" bag. Learn more
  • Fill out a contact card from www.ready.gov to help you keep your important contact information with you at all times.
  • Know the location of your utilities (at home and work). Document where and how to turn off the water, gas, and electricity safely; know which you can turn back on yourself (electricity: yes, water: if you know how, gas: never). You can get additional information from your utility companies on their websites or call.
  • In an emergency, consider texting instead of calling. A text message may get through when a phone call will not.
  • I also encourage you to follow my social media accounts (at the bottom of the newsletter) and Fairfax County's social media accounts to ensure you receive the latest information.

The top priority for me and my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors is to keep our residents safe, but we need your help. Be prepared. Make a plan. If you have any questions about emergency preparedness, please email my office at huntermill@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Regards,

Walter
