Millions of Americans live with mental health and/or substance use disorders.  Although there is no racial, ethnic, or cultural association with the prevalence of these disorders, it is a fact that communities of color in the United States face significant mental health inequities and greater barriers in getting the treatment they need.

Virginia's small rural hospitals are busy preparing to become rated among the best hospitals in the nation. On June 27, 2016, the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association facilitated the first quarterly Leadership Development Institute (LDI) at the Roanoke Higher Education Center in Roanoke, Virginia. Twelve rural hospitals with 50 beds or less completed partnership agreements to participate in this Studer Group driven  Virginia Rural Hospital Coaching Collaborative . The Studer Group has been nationally recognized for its successes in coaching hospitals to "hardwire excellence" into the way they do business.  Greg Paris , a member of the Studer Group Speakers Bureau, conducted a day-long event where 45 hospital administrators networked and engaged in in-depth discussions about deploying key Studer tactics. Mr. Paris is former rural hospital CEO and quite up to the task of understanding exactly where Virginia rural hospital administrators need the most help. Each group of hospital representatives left the LDI with a Work Plan for moving forward toward creating a culture of engagement with patients and throughout the hospital workforce. This initiative is partially funded by the  Virginia Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant Program , which is managed by the Office of Health Equity.
