The statewide order can be viewed on the IDALS website.

HPAI Detected in Several Iowa

Dairy Herds

Dairy Herds in the Iowa counties of Sioux are the most recent locations for positive cases Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) according to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and USDA APHIS. To date, 13 total dairy herds in Sioux, O'Brien, and Plymouth counties in Iowa have had positive cases of HPAI.

To view a current list of Iowa counties affected by HPAI, visit the IDALS Latest News website page. National cases are tracked on the USDA APHIS website.

Please remind your clients to review and follow the IDALS Biosecurity Recommendations for Dairy Farms. Poultry owners, including commercial producers or backyard flock owners, should also continute to practice good biosecurity.

IDALS would like to remind veterinarians to report any suspected cases of HPAI to them at 515-281-5305.

For additional information on HPAI, please visit the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s website

IDALS Temporarily Waives Required PT Testing for Poultry

The required Pullorum-Typhoid (PT) antigen test for poultry at exhibitions has been temporarily waived because of a lack of availablity. The only U.S. supplier of the PT antigen is experiencing significant shortages with product being unavailable to purchase until late summer 2024. In addition, the existing Iowa stocks of the PT antigen have essentially been exhausted.

In this letter, IDALS granted the waiver of Iowa Administrative Code sections 21-60.4(2), 64.34(7) and 64.35(4) until September 1, 2024, or until the product becomes available, whichever occurs first, for poultry to be present at exhibitions, shows or sales without coming from Pullorum-Typhoid clean flocks or having a Pullorum-Typhoid test.

Nominate for IVMA Awards

IVMA CVM Student Internship & Shadowing Directory

The IVMA CVM Student Internship &Shadowing Directory was developed several years ago to bring together veterinary students and clinics who are willing to provide learning opportunities through job shadowing, externships, or preceptorships.

The Directory is available on the IVMA website under Careers & Classifieds. It is the student’s responsibility to reach out to the clinic and pursue the learning opportunity. Once approached by the student, the clinics are responsible for interviewing and negotiating the details of the learning opportunity with the student.

If you are not already included in the Directory and would like to be listed, fill out this Google form. A link to the form can also be found on the IVMA website under Careers and Classifieds. The list is ongoing, and each summer, the IVMA will contact participating clinics and ask if they would like to remain in the Directory or if they have any updates. A clinic can remove their name from the Directory at any time by contacting the IVMA office.
