What a Year! Your Team Deserves an Award
This past year has been especially challenging for so many of our veterinary teams.

Navigating through new COVID-19 protocols, a lack of PPE, switching to curbside service, trying to keep everyone safe and healthy, all while being extra busy with regular clients and new pandemic puppies.

Your team deserves an award! Although we usually honor one person for our Healthcare Team Member Service Award, we will also consider presenting the award to an entire veterinary team. Nominate your deserving team for the 2021 Healthcare Team (Member) Service Award! After this year of challenges, they deserve it!

The awards will be presented during lunch on Thursday, September 30 at the IVMA Annual Meeting.

Besides the Healthcare Team Member Service Award, we are also looking for nominations for the Veterinarian of the Year Award and the
Rising Star Award. Consider nominating those hard-working veterinary professionals in your life.

For more information on any of the IVMA Awards and nomination forms visit  www.iowavma.org or call the IVMA office at 800-369-9564.

The deadline for nominations is August 3rd.

Volunteers Needed to Coat Veterinary Students
Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine will host two White Coat Ceremonies in August to honor both the incoming class of 2025 and the class of 2024 who were unable to hold their ceremony last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first ceremony will honor the Class of 2024 and will be held on Friday, August 6 at 6:00 pm at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium in Ames, IA. The ceremony for the Class of 2025 will be held on Friday, August 20 at 6:00 pm, also at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium. The ceremony is traditionally held as the formal conclusion of Freshman Orientation and is symbolic of these students taking their first steps into the veterinary profession.

Students are coated by a veterinarian of their choice, a CVM faculty member or a veterinarian who volunteers to participate in the ceremony. If you have not already been contacted by a student and are interested in being a coater at one or both of these ceremonies, please contact Dr. Monica Howard (mohoward@iastate.edu) by July 23, 2021.
Updates to the Iowa Animal Exhibition Requirements
With county fairs and the Iowa State Fair upon us, the State District Veterinarians would like to remind veterinarians of several changes for Animal Exhibition Requirements in Iowa for 2021.

1.      Swine at all exhibitions in Iowa are required to be inspected by an Iowa licensed, category II accredited veterinarian either before being unloaded or before leaving a designated isolation and inspection area (prior to mixing with any other pigs).

2.      For swine requiring Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVI’s), the swine are required to be inspected by an Iowa licensed, category II accredited veterinarian within 7 days prior to arriving at the exhibition site and the inspection date must be noted on the CVI. Sheep must be inspected within 14 days and most other species must be inspected within 30 days prior to arriving at the exhibition site. Be sure to review the individual show rules as well.

3.      All swine are required to be officially identified. In the past, 4H swine had been allowed to use a 4H tag and ear notches in place of official ID tags as long as both tag and ear notch numbers were written on the CVI.  Currently, 4H swine (as well as ANY other swine) are required to have an official ID tag in them with the complete official ID tag number recorded on the CVI. Official ID tags are tags that have the US shield on them.

To view other issues that are consistently seen at exhibitions each year, read the entire article.

How Are We Doing? Complete the IVMA Member Survey
In order get a better idea of how the IVMA is meeting its members' needs, we are conducting a Member Needs and Satisfaction Survey. We hope to use the results of the survey to improve the quality of service and benefits the IVMA is providing to our members and get new ideas for future offerings.
Last week, you should have received the survey via email if you have an email on file with the IVMA or in the mail if you don't have email. The survey should take you about 15 minutes to complete and you have until July 30 to complete the survey.
If you take the survey, you will be in a drawing for a $100 VISA gift card! Our online survey program will allow you to enter the drawing, while still keeping your answers anonymous (mailed survey will need to include a name to be entered in the drawing).
Thank you for helping to make the IVMA a better association for YOU!
