Hudson River Advocate Klara Sauer Dies at 79

The staff and board members of the Hudson River Valley Greenway and National Heritage Area are saddened by the recent death of Klara Sauer, the former longtime director of Scenic Hudson. Mrs. Sauer led Scenic Hudson with remarkable enthusiasm from 1979 to 1999, overseeing incredible organizational growth and countless successes in the protection and advocacy of the Hudson River. She worked tirelessly to establish the Hudson River Valley Greenway in 1991 and was greatly active in achieving National Heritage Area designation for the Hudson Valley. Scenic Hudson has memorialized Klara Sauer's life and work in this fitting tribute and this Poughkeepsie Journal article recalls Mrs. Sauer's vital role in the formation of the Hudson River Valley Greenway. Photo courtesy of Scenic Hudson/K.C. Latest Edition of The Hudson River Water Trail Guide Released
The Hudson River Watertrail Association has just released the 7th edition of The Hudson River Water Trail Guide, the most comprehensive guide to paddling the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail available. Greenway trails and special projects director Scott Keller and the Hudson River Water Trail Association worked together to give this long-running guide its first update since 2003. The Hudson River Watertrail Association has been a valuable partner with the Greenway in its efforts to create a National Water Trail stretching from New York Harbor to the southern end of Lake Champlain, which now features over one hundred designated access sites.

D & H Canal Historical Society and Museum

In July 1823, ground was broken on the Delaware and Hudson Canal, a 108-mile waterway running between the Hudson River and Pennsylvania's Coal Region. The canal was one of the civil engineering marvels of its day, and allowed the passage of mule-drawn barges laden with anthracite bound for the New York City market via the Hudson. This cheap and abundant source of coal proved essential to the rapid growth of New York City and its role as the nation's leading city in the 19th century.

Today, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Museum is dedicated to the history and culture of this important Hudson Valley canal. Over 4,000 artifacts, including maps, documents, and models are housed in a Gothic Revival chapel built in 1885. The Five Locks Walk also allows visitors trailside access to five original locks. For more on the D&H Canal Historical Society and Museum and to plan a visit, please visit the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.

Green Tip Of The Month GreenTip

Green Lawn and Garden Care

Lawn and garden care can be surprisingly costly in environmental terms, consuming far more water and gasoline than we realize. Emissions from powered lawn tools and pollution from lawn-care chemicals and pesticides also threaten the environment in our very backyards, in addition to the great noise pollution associated with mowers. The Environmental Protection Agency has compiled a list of green lawn care tips that will help you maintain your beloved grassy lawn in a more environmentally-responsible way.

The E-Newsletter is published monthly and emailed to friends of the Hudson River Valley
