In May, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced that three Delaware organizations, including the Division of the Arts, will receive $729,100 in federal grants.

The
Delaware Division of the Arts will receive a Partnership (State & Regional) grant in the amount of $689,100 to support activities associated with carrying out its NEA-approved State strategic plan.
“Representing 17% of the Division’s budget, NEA funding is critical in supporting arts programming that directly reaches more than 30 communities throughout Delaware, serving more than 1 million youth and adults annually,” says Paul Weagraff, Director of the Delaware Division of the Arts. “This investment in Delaware’s creative sector contributes positively to vibrant communities, comprehensive educational opportunities, and robust economic activity.”

The
Delaware Art Museum will receive an Art Works – Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works grant in the amount of $25,000 to support its Bridging Perspectives series of multidisciplinary performances addressing the history of the Civil Rights Movement and contemporary issues related to social justice and equity.
“The NEA and Art Works grants support the arts and its ability to change lives and impact communities,” says Delaware Art Museum Executive Director and CEO, Sam Sweet. “Bridging Perspectives is a new initiative at the Museum reflecting our vision to engage our community, promote conversation, and foster understanding. We are so pleased that this initiative has earned support that will enable the Museum to better serve our community.”

The
Grand Opera House will receive an Art Works – Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works grant in the amount of $15,000 to support its sensory-friendly family performances series which welcomes children of all ages with autism or other sensory, social or learning disabilities to experience live entertainment.
“The Grand is proud to continue our new sensory friendly programming thanks to this generous gift from the NEA. Our mission urges us to be accessible to all residents of the Brandywine Valley, and this gift, our second NEA grant in two years, allows us to further develop this valuable and much-needed program, says Mark Fields, executive director of the Grand Opera House.

New Grants System: smARTDE
|
|
We’re excited to announce that beginning this summer, the Division will be moving to a new online grant application and management system–smARTDE. This system will replace the Division’s existing eGrant system, offering a much more robust, user-friendly, and stable platform for all users–grant applicants, reviewers, onsite evaluators, and staff. All existing grant application data will be transferred to smARTDE.
Applicants/Grantees will be able to log in to apply for future grant opportunities, and also to see grant history, current grant payment schedule, panel comments, onsite evaluations, and more. SmARTDE will also be the registration portal for the Poetry Out Loud program, event registrations, and Mezzanine Gallery applications.
Beginning in 2019, we expect that smARTDE will also accept Individual Artist Fellowship applications. Until then, applicants will apply as normal through Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation's eGrant system.
To orient applicants/grantees to the new system, a series of statewide in-person meetings and webinars have been scheduled to help users understand the new smARTDE system.

Established Professional, Music: Solo Recital
|
Stomberg’s career encompasses hundreds of performances across the country and on four continents, a seven-recording discography and a debut at Carnegie Hall. But he is still on his journey of discovery, striving to “learn new skills, dig deeper into the elements of the music, and further hone my musical communication with an audience.”

Emerging Professional, Music: Solo Recital
|
As a harpsichordist, Chen has been mostly educated in “historically informed performance practice,” the attempt to re-create music as it would have been heard when it was written. But Chen is also exploring contemporary music. In addition to the standard harpsichord repertoire, she is a proponent of new music composed for her instrument.

Jason Weaver: Works on Paper
|
Hoody
, 2018, charcoal, 18" x 24"
|
|
Jason Weaver: Works on Paper, an exhibition showing a range of work from academic figure studies to people in contemporary street settings, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from July 6-27, 2018. A free closing reception to meet the artist will be held on Friday, July 27 from 5-7 p.m.
Weaver’s main subject matter is the human form and he typically works in charcoal, chalk or graphite on paper.
Weaver says, “I enjoy the challenge of capturing a mood. The overall goal is to bring the viewer in, and even if for a moment, relate it to the subject. The human form has a sort of organic symmetry that is difficult to capture but is rewarding when it strikes a chord with the viewer.”
|
|
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the
Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.

On-Site Evaluators Needed
|
|
If you love the arts and actively participate in programs or attend events, you may be a candidate to serve as an on-site evaluator for the Division. We are currently seeking to expand our list of potential evaluators who are dependable, articulate observers with knowledge in one or more art forms (you do not need to be professionally trained in the arts).
Evaluators generally attend and produce a written review of two or more programs each year, including performances, exhibits, workshops or classes, and more. Experience new art forms and see more of Delaware’s treasures while serving a vital role in the review of grant-funded programs. If interested, please complete the
