Newsletter July 2018
Welcome to Cowes Harbour Services
A big welcome to our first newsletter for “Cowes Harbour Services”, the new division name for Cowes Harbour Commission’s marine services, including all our moorings, the Boatyard, storage options, fuel, and commercial operations.

We have been busy with site improvements for the Cowes Harbour Services base at Kingston Wharf, including new customer parking, and we continue to work closely with all our tenants on site to create a marine industry community that is beneficial to all. We are always here to listen to our customers, and so please do get in touch if we can help in any way.

As I write, there are just 17 days and 9 hours until Lendy Cowes Week starts! If you are still thinking about booking a berth , then do call our moorings team at Shepards Marina. We have a few spaces available and this year's regatta is looking set to be a brilliant week for competitors, afloat and ashore.

In the yard this month
The 38ft classic yacht Whooper was built by Attrill’s yard in St Helens and launched in 1939. She has been far afield in her life to date, and now she’s back as a true Isle of Wight girl!

Owner Giovanni Belgrano told us: “I’ve had Whooper for the past 18 years, and we are having tremendous fun, ducking and gybing equally with classics and moderns in the Solent. We’ve won the IRC Nationals, Round The Island, and Cowes Week twice, and Panerai British Classic Week three times!

“Key to this,” Giovanni said, “is being able to keep Whooper at Shepards Marina, and relying on the facilities and friendly CHC staff. I enjoy tinkering there, and spend a lot more time there than at work or home!

“The seamless use of the great Cowes Harbour Services Boatyard facility at Kingston means we have made a ritual of pulling out there to prepare for 'the big one’, the RTI race - the one that 'counts’ - as we live here!"

Commercial marine projects
Our multi-disciplinary afloat team at Cowes Harbour Services has been working hard on a variety of local marine contracts recently. These have included a diverse range of jobs for Red Funnel over the last few months, which are carried out at night where necessary to avoid disruption to ferry traffic. Our team performs ongoing maintenance at both the East and West Cowes terminals, along with special request contracts such as repairing damaged fendering. We are also about to start painting the East Cowes link span gantry over the next two months.

Spotlight on two of our team at the Boatyard...
Jon Lucas started working at Shepards Wharf in 1996, where his father had been Yard Manager for many years. Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) took over Shepards Wharf in 2001 and Jon then moved up to what was Kingston Marine Services to help set up the new boatyard for CHC in 2014.

Now Boatyard Team Leader for Cowes Harbour Services, Jon said: “I enjoy meeting customers and looking after their boats. When a customer is pleased with the work we have done for them, whether that is launching their boat or giving it a spruce up, it makes my day. Some of our regulars have been coming so long they are more like old friends than customers!”
Helen Gilpin is our cheerful and efficient Administrator at the Cowes Harbour Services Boatyard at Kingston Wharf in East Cowes. She joined us three years ago from IYWAC (Island Youth Water Activities Centre), where she had worked for 18 years. Helen’s two sons also both work on the river, one at Spencer Rigging and the other at the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat Centre. Outside of work, she really enjoys getting out and about with her five grandchildren, who are all under six years old!

Helen said: “I love living in Cowes, and I’ve been on the Island for 28 years now. At work, the view from my office over the River is amazing, and the team here are really great, there’s such a friendly atmosphere.”
