The Pastor's Reflections

"A time for everything under heaven"
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
A number of us recently finished a study of this perplexing, troubling, and ultimately wonderful book.  When the author writes these words his basic premise is simply that God has ordained a time for all things.  (He probably means more than that, too.)  A careful reading of the book will lead one quickly to the conclusion that for us to discern what is the right time, God's time, for particular events or developments is downright difficult.  He might even say, impossible.
And yet we are summoned to be the hands and voice of Christ in the world, in God's kingdom already present here on the earth, and so we serve and love and speak as the Spirit enables us, individually and together, even if we can't discern well, or at all, what God may be up to.  We know that we are cherished, we know that we have been redeemed, we know that we are sent, and perhaps, hopefully, prayerfully, ... that is enough.
Joy in Christ,
Pastor John

Do any of these words ring a bell for you?  Perhaps bringing to mind memories of an experience that proved to be transformative, renewing, and powerful?
These are only a few of the several three-day spiritual renewal movements sponsored by churches of various denominations across our nation.  If you have participated in one of these three-day events, I would like to hear from you.  We could meet and talk about your experience, but if you could simply let me know that you have participated in one of them that information would be valuable to me.  I would like to have some idea how many of our saints have had this experience.
If you have not participated in one of these events, but would like to know more, I would be glad to talk with you.
Thanks sincerely.

Stewardship Season 2018
"Again, I say, Rejoice!"
It may seem more than a bit early to be hearing about stewardship, but (as it turns out) the season itself will be earlier this year.  The season will begin on Sunday, September 23 and conclude on Sunday, October 14.  On that concluding Sunday, Celebration Sunday, we will enjoy a catered luncheon in the Fellowship Hall following worship.  Please plan to be there!

We will not be mailing out pledge cards in  advance this year, but they will be available on Celebration Sunday.  In the meantime, please be praying and thinking about your pledge of giving to our church for 2018.  After Celebration Sunday we will mail out cards to any individuals or families we miss on that date.
Stewardship of God's resources is a spiritual discipline.  Stewardship is a recognition that all things, after all, belong to God; we have the privilege of managing them for a while.  Stewardship is an expression of thanksgiving for God's overflowing grace, especially the grace of redemption and salvation through his Son.  Stewardship of God's resources is a recognition that the God who loves and claims us is a generous God, so in our imitation of God, we are also generous.  To be a faithful and generous steward is one important facet of being a disciple of Christ.
The theme for Stewardship 2018 is drawn from Paul's letter to the Philippians:
"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice!"
Join us.  Rejoice in the Lord.  Rejoice!
Peace and joy,
Pastor John

July 2018
"Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.  But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."
~Philippians 3:13
My daughter just turned 18 and upon returning home from our vacation to California she immediately began packing her belongings and promptly announced that she was moving out.  The shock at the suddenness of it hit me like a ton of bricks, and from the time she did move out last week on the same day that she announced it, my mind has been playing like a broken record all the things I may have done wrong throughout her life to have caused her to so abruptly leave like that.
