I love working with the owners and team at small and medium-sized businesses. They have a contagious passion for what they do, and are very good at it. For a business to survive and thrive, though, the management needs to shift its focus from what doing what their company does, to becoming leaders and managers of an organization. (Note: You manage processes, you lead people,) As I often say, they need to work less IN their business and more ON their business. In many cases, that's not where their passion or their expertise is.
The Chamber is heavily invested in the success of its members, which is why the Education Committee exists. In my business, I help clients learn and apply management and leadership tools to make that transition. That is probably why I was asked to join the committee. All of our members, Tori Haines, Cammie Humpke, and Leah Hoppes include a teaching component in working with clients. Under Jim's guidance, we plan to work with the other groups in the Chamber to provide a dynamic set of educational opportunities to meet the needs of our members. Two programs that we will be offering in the fall will focus on hiring, which is critically important to growing any business, and on the often overlooked challenges of sales management. We also intend to build on the success of the small business academy that we offered last year and broaden our course offerings
