Special Populations: Youth & Substance Use
Update - Indian Country Opioid Response Community of Learning (CoL) Webinar Series: We will no longer have regularly scheduled webinars.

Special Population - Youth & Substance Use: The prevention, treatment and recovery process related to Substance Use and Opioid Use Disorder is already very complex. It becomes even more complex when working with youth. Psychological and physiological differences between youth and adults requires different approaches in how SUD/ OUD are addressed. While best practices are constantly evolving to keep up with the latest research in the field, support for the incorporation and use of traditional ways and culture, as well as peer groups has continued. Promising Practices in Indian Country for Youth
The Healing of the Canoe (HOC) Project was developed through a collaboration between the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe, Suquamish Tribe, and the University of Washington's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute (ADAI). HOC was created to address community concerns to be "an evidence-based, strengths-based life skills curriculum for youth that uses culture to prevent substance abuse, and connect youth to community and culture".

Part of the State of Oregon's Recovery High School Initiative includes the incorporation of Alternative Peer Groups (APGs) . APGs take a holistic, continuum of care approach, providing youth with a safe, substance-free space and providing support to them through a group of peers who have similar experiences. This helps to promote and maintain their long-term recovery process.
