‘Coasters for Cancer’ Celebrates Cancer Survivorship
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, RWJBarnabas Health and Six Flags Great Adventure have joined forces to fight cancer and celebrate survivorship with the unveiling of Coasters for Cancer - the first roller coaster wrapped in the hand prints of cancer survivors and supporters. The previously collected hand prints were transferred onto the Runaway Mine Train, which is the focal point of a cancer prevention and awareness campaign at the New Jersey theme park that will last all season. Last month, more than 200 cancer survivors and their families gathered at the park to take the inaugural ride.Watch the video
Marking 20 Years of LIFE
Last month, Val Skinner and the Val Skinner Foundation marked the 20th anniversary of the LIFE Event, a charity golf outing that has raised more than $12M for breast cancer research, awareness and prevention programs since its inception in 2000 which includes more than $5M raised to support the LIFE (LPGA pros In the Fight to Eradicate breast cancer) Center and precision medicine efforts at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. During the event Rutgers Cancer Institute’sDeborah Toppmeyer, MD, chief medical officer and director of the LIFE Center and Stacy Goldstein Breast Cancer Center was named the ‘LIFE Champion’ to recognize her dedication and compassion to her patients, her research, and the fight against breast cancer. Fine ‘Tuning’ Tumor Classification with TuBA
Investigators at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey have developed a computational method that uncovers clinically relevant gene expression patterns in large cohorts of breast cancer patients. This method, which is applicable to the analysis of all cancers, can robustly describe molecular processes that are associated with tumor subtypes and can identify predictive markers of response to treatment or recurrence.Learn more
Helping Pediatric Cancer Survivors Address Mental Health
Anxiety, depression and stress related to childhood cancer survivorship can be challenging for this population. That is why Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey educates pediatric cancer survivors about these and other topics through its LITE Program. Part of this education effort includes an annual Survivor’s Family Education Night, which for the past four years received support through a ‘Beyond the Cure’ grant from the National Children’s Cancer Society.
