2019 Metro South & Choice Graduation
Metro South Adult Basic Education and Choice Alternative School held their 2019 graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 13th at Olson Middle School in Bloomington. Thirty-three graduates crossed the stage to receive their GED or Minnesota High School Adult Diploma.

Gary Kressin, Choice Alternative School principal, gave the welcome address to the audience of family, friends, and school staff members. Director of Metro South ABE, Kellie McGowan, introduced the graduation speakers Faiza Ahmed from the Metro South program and Danielle Sorenson from the Choice program.

Faiza shared her story of immigration to the United States and her struggle to learn English. When her youngest child was 4 months old, she enrolled in the adult diploma program at Metro South. Her goal is to "give a speech at my college graduation four years from now."

Danielle liked the Choice program because "... it’s at your own pace, so you can move as fast as you want. I was doing almost just as much work at home as I was doing while at school." Danielle also attended the cosmetology program at Bloomington Career and College Academy while earning her credits at Choice.

Both students thanked their teachers and the staff at Metro South and Choice for helping them to succeed. A slideshow featuring the graduates was shown after the presentation of diplomas. The evening ended with a reception in the school cafeteria, lots of hugs, photos, and happy faces!

Learning to Swim for Free!
The Community Education Aquatics Department is teaching 61 children how to swim this summer.....for FREE!

As part of the USA Swimming Foundation Grant, Summer School students at Oak Grove Elementary school will take six, 40-minute classes in the basics of swimming.

"I am so excited to be given this opportunity to provide more swim lessons to the kids in Bloomington," says Aquatics Coordinator Betsy Miller. "Learning how to swim is such an important lifelong skill. Swimming is the only sport which can save a child's life...Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children, so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill."
