Wind Point Village Picnic - Sunday, August 11!

All Wind Point residents are invited to the Annual Village Picnic, at Village Green park and pavilion on Sunday, August 11, 2019! The event will be held from 3-7 p.m. and will include a picnic-style buffet catered by Danny's Meats, live music, bounce house, face-painting, local craft beer from Public Brewing Co, and games for kids.

through August 1, 2018. Pre-registration cost is $7 per adult (age 10 and up), $3.50 per child (age 4-9) and children under 4 are free. Day of admission price is $10 per adult and $6 per child. Admission includes non- alcoholic refreshments and dinner, which will be served between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. For assistance with purchasing tickets online, please call the Village Office at 639-3524.
Restrooms are on site. In addition to the pavilion area, a large tented area will be provided courtesy of Johnson Bank. Some picnic tables will be provided but it is suggested to bring lawn chairs. Note the picnic is limited to Wind Point residents.

The Village Office will be closed on Thursday, July 4 due to the holiday. The office will be open on Friday, July 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All collections services (garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk items) will take place as scheduled. The Racine 4th Fest fireworks display will take place at dusk on July 4 (approximately 9:20 p.m.). They can be best seen from North Beach in Racine. Fireworks Reminders
Please note that fireworks that propel into the air are prohibited in the Village. Fireworks and related toy items that stay on the ground are allowed, but loud noises (especially at night) may be considered a nuisance under Village ordinances. Please be respectful of your neighbors, especially to combat veterans and others with sensitivity to loud noises

Wind Point Lighthouse Open Tower Days - July 6 & July 7
The tours are a great opportunity to take in the history of the lighthouse and the breathtaking views from the top of the tower! Wear sturdy walking or tennis shoes. Flip flops are not recommended. No high heels. Must be physically fit and able to climb 11 stories (144 steps).

Bike Parade - July 9 at 6:30 p.m. - Rescheduled
All Wind Point families are invited to the annual Bike Parade. The meeting place will be Village Green Pavilion (215 E. Four Mile Rd.). Kids dress in red, white and blue! Decorate bikes, scooters or wagons! The parade route is east on E. 4 Mile Rd., right on Fairway Dr., left on E. Point Dr., left on James Ave., left on Hollow Creek and back around to Village Green. Treat will be served to all after the parade.

Wind Point Night at the Racine Raiders- July 13 at 7 p.m.
See the Racine Raiders take on the Fox Valley Force for the first ever Wind Point Night at Historic Horlick Field, 1648 N. Memorial Drive. Tickets for the special package are $10 each and can be purchased at Kortendick Ace Hardware (3806 Douglas Avenue). Make sure to ask for the special Wind Point Night tickets.

Wind Point Day at Kenosha King Fish- July 20 at 6:40 pm

Wind Point Daytime Bridge Marathon

The Wind Point Bridge Marathon is a great way to get to know your Wind Point neighbors and make new friends. Matches are played September through May. The season is capped off with a lovely spring luncheon and bridge.

In order to improve overall safety in our parks, the Village Board recently amended park hours. Parks will now be closed between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The change affects Village Green, the Lighthouse Grounds and Shoop Park.

With summer in full swing please keep in mind the following safety tips from the United States Fire Administration as you and your family enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer.

Grill & Outdoor Fire Safety
- Only use grills outdoors. Using a grill indoors can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Make sure your grill is placed well away from siding and deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches.
- Use long handed utensils and grill mitts when using your grill to prevent burns.
- Do not store or use a grill on a porch or balcony.
- Make sure to keep fire pits, chimneas and outdoor fireplaces at least 10 feet away from your home or anything that can burn.

Bike & Pedestrian Safety
- When biking always ride with traffic and in a single file line.
- When walking or running always go against traffic.
- Obey all traffic signs and lights when on your bike.
- Ride with both hands on the handle bars.
- Always wear a bike helmet. The helmet should always fit snugly all around with no spaces between the foam and the riders head.
- Wear clothes that are bright so that people can see you.
- Make sure that your bike has reflectors on it.

Swimming & Water Safety
- Adults need to stay with children when they are around water. For preschoolers, an adult should always be close enough to touch the child.
- Always swim with a buddy, never swim alone.
- Never swim near a boat, marina or boat launching ramp.
- Make sure to always use a U.S. Coast Guard approved life safety jacket.
- Keep your pool and deck clear of floats, balls and toys after you get out of the pool.

Feral Cat Care and Control
|
|
We recently received questions regarding the Village's policy to deal with feral cats in the community. Feral cats are the offspring of outdoor domesticated cats that roam free and are not sterilized. They cannot be picked up or handled by humans as they are wild cats that are several generations removed from human ownership. Feral cats can become a nuisance as they often prey upon birds and other small animals and also dig up flower beds and other residential plants.
The Village contracts with the Racine Campus of the Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) for animal control services. To help control the feral cat population, WHS utilizes a method known as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). This method involves humanely trapping cats, bringing those cats to WHS where they are sterilized, vaccinated and receive an ear-tip to confirm their sterilization. If a cat that was trapped is socialized, they are adopted into homes, while cats that are truly feral are returned to their original location.
While there are other options to deal with feral cats, such as trap and kill or trap and remove, TNR is the most humane tool available for dealing with this issue. The method reduces the number of feral cats in the community. It ends the breeding of unwanted cats, reduces the number of free roaming cats, stops many nuisance cat behaviors such as spraying, yowling and fighting, and removes unhealthy cats from the population.
If you notice a stray or feral cat on your property, the Wisconsin Humane Society can provide assistance. WHS offers TNR services by appointment every Friday and can be of assistance to residents who have questions about controlling the cat population. Lake Michigan Water Levels
|
|
Lake Michigan is close to the record water level that was set in October 1986. Depending on future rainfall around Lake Michigan this record could be reached sometime this summer.
The National Weather Service in Milwaukee is very concerned about the impacts the high water levels may have during higher wind events and storms. Potential impacts may include:
- People on piers being swept off by waves and high water.
- Direct flooding of structures along the shore.
- Direct flooding into river mouths with already high water levels.
- Any rapid moderate to strong water level fluctuation occurring with fast-moving thunderstorms, producing seiches, that may cause lakeshore flooding as well as swamping piers and break walls.
Due to the high water levels the National Weather Service plans to implement more stringent guidelines regarding the issuance of Lakeshore Flood Watches/ Warnings and Advisory headlines. Watches, warnings or advisories will be issued under the following conditions:
Lakeshore Flood Watch/Warning
- Storm force onshore winds (48 knots or more) for any duration.
- High end Gale Force winds (Gales of 40-47 knots) for any duration.
- Low end Gale Force winds (Gales of 34 to 40 knots) for 3 to 6 hours or more
A watch is issued when conditions are expected in the next 12 to 48 hour period. A warning is issued when conditions are imminent, highly likely or observed in the first 12 to 24 hour period.
Lakeshore Flood Advisory
- Onshore winds to 33 knots for 3 to 6 hours or more.
- Onshore winds of 15 to 25 knots for 6 hours or more.
Remember to take any watch, warning or advisory seriously. Water levels and flow can change quickly during flooding events. Remember to remain aware by monitoring local radio and television and by checking the internet and social media. Federal, State and Local officials will work to protect life and property in the event of any emergency.

The Village Board of Trustees met for a regular meeting on June 13, 2018. The following actions took place at the meeting:
- Approved zoning permits for security fence projects for S.C. Johnson at 22 E. Four Mile Road, and 15 E. Four Mile Road.
- Approved a conditional use permit for the construction of a HAM radio antenna at 5408 W. Branch Trail.
- Received reports from the Architectural Review Board on approved projects at 205 E. Four Mile Road (Deck Addition) and 111 White Sand Lane (Shed).
- Received a report on the 2018 Village Audit.
- Approved Ordinance 19-02 amending closing hours for Village parks.
- Received reports from the Parks & Facilities Committee regarding updates to the tennis and pickleball courts including the purchase of new trash cans, construction of new paths to the courts and the purchase of new announcement boards.
- Approved a private well permit for 5050 Valley Trail.
- Approved alcohol license renewals for Shoop Park Golf, Wingspread and the Council House.
- Approved new and renewal operator (bartender) licenses.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Village Hall (lighthouse).
