BELIEVE IT OR NOT
Seamus Parfrey
By Seamus Parfrey

A true story.

Last month a large and loud Texan went into McSorley's an old Irish pub in New York and shouted out, 'I hear you Irish are a bunch of drinkin' fools. I'll give $1000 to anybody in here who can drink 10 pints of Guinness back to back.'

The room is quiet and no one takes up the Texan's offer.

My nephew Patrick gets up and leaves the bar.

Thirty minutes later, he comes back and taps the Texan on the shoulder.  "Is your bet still good?' he asks.

The Texan answers, 'Yes', and he orders the barman to line up 10 pints of Guinness.

The pub goes wild and the Texan sits down in amazement.

He gives Patrick $1000 and asks, 'If ya don't mind me askin', where did you go for that 30 minutes you were gone?'

Patrick replies, 'Oh...

... I had to go to the pub down the block to see if I could do it first.'

He famously declared in a "Citizenship in a Republic" speech that business men and women should always keep in mind when the going gets tough:

7 WAYS YOU CAN SET BETTER GOALS FOR SALES TEAMS
Seamus Parfrey
By Seamus Parfrey

Harvard Business Review provides guidance on strategies to use when sales goal setting can be prone to error.

Most sales forces use sales goals to focus attention on what's important and give salespeople direction about what to do. Goals energize people and encourage them to keep going.

Very often, companies link sales force incentive pay to goal achievement. This makes effective goal setting essential for directing and motivating sales teams and controlling sales compensation costs.
