Building Healthful Food into Healthcare Systems:
|
Leveraging research that highlights the connection between food security and health outcomes, Massachusetts released the
Food is Medicine State Plan
, which integrates access to healthful food into the state healthcare system. The medically-tailored meals included in this emerging initiative could
prevent hospital visits and help individuals save on medical bills
.
|
|
Research connection:
Individuals who received medically tailored meals for 6 months had
50% fewer inpatient admissions and 70% fewer emergency department visits
than similar patients not enrolled in the meal program. Researchers found an
average net savings of $220 per patient per month
(16% savings on total medical expenditures) after factoring in the costs of the medically tailored meals. (S.
A. Berkowitz et al, 2018).
