What to do if
ICE is at your door
|
On the 23rd of June, the President tweeted the following message, as news outlets and social media was flooded with alerts that ICE agents were going to be making sweeps.
"I want to give the Democrats every last chance to quickly negotiate simple changes to Asylum and Loopholes. This will fix the Southern Border, together with the help that Mexico is now giving us. Probably won’t happen, but worth a try. Two weeks and big Deportation begins!"
One specific scenario is ICE agents showing up at your home. According to the ACLU, it is important to note the following steps:
What to do when the police or ICE arrive:
-Ask if they are immigration agents and what they are there for.
-Ask the agent or officer to show you a badge or identification through the window or peephole.
-Ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge. If they say they do, ask them to slide it under the door or hold it up to a window so you can inspect it.
-Don’t lie or produce any false documents. Don’t sign anything without speaking with a lawyer first.
-Do not open your door unless ICE shows you a judicial search or arrest warrant naming a person in your residence and/or areas to be searched at your address. If they don’t produce a warrant, keep the door closed. State: “I do not consent to your entry.”
-If agents force their way in, do not resist. If you wish to exercise your rights, state: “I do not consent to your entry or to your search of these premises. I am exercising my right to remain silent. I wish to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible.”
-If you are on probation with a search condition, law enforcement is allowed to enter your home.

American Summer Dessert: S’mores
|
In need of a last minute 4th of July dessert?
The best of them all is none other than the S'more! The S'more is a summertime American classic. Most of our clients were raised outside of the United States and have never tried this treat. You must add smore's to your 4th of July plans. This is Zaira's favorite summer dessert, and we know after one bite, it will be your favorite too.
The basics of S'mores just requires the following:
-Marshmallows
-Skewers (skinny tree branch or clothes hanger)
-Graham crackers
-Chocolate Bar
-And an open flame.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A S’MORE?
The most basic answer is you break a graham cracker in half and lay the two halves on a plate. Top with a square of chocolate (if using a Hershey’s bar this would be 2 rectangles). Heat/roast a marshmallow over the fire. Place roasted marshmallow between chocolate and graham cracker halves as if making a sandwich.
Enjoy, and have more ingredients ready because you will want more than one!

s we approach the 4th of July, what does being an American mean to you?"
"Fourth of July means freedom. It means having the ability to do anything you want in a country where pretty much anything is possible. I think freedom also means choice. In America, we have the privilege of having so many options and so many choices regarding where we want to go to school, where do we want to work, what do we want to eat, how do we want to spend our time. I believe that's huge privilege. When I think of freedom,
I also think about all of the brave men and women who defend our freedom on a daily basis. Lastly, I think about the immigrants who contribute to our society and continue building America."

"What are your plans for celebrating 4th of July this year?"
"Other than the fireworks, I love celebrating our country on Fourth of July, and every few years, my entire family does a camping trip to Lake Allatoona, right outside of Atlanta. We take all the kids, we pack up a lot of food, we roast tons of s'mores, play games, tell stories, and it's so much fun.
This year my husband and I are going to our favorite place ... the beach. We absolutely love the water and anytime that we are off from work or go on vacation, it generally has to do with the beach or some type of water-related activity. We've worked really hard this first half of the year, and we are going to swim, relax, and catch up on reading some books that we've been wanting to read and haven't had time. We are really look forward to it."

"What is your favorite 4th of July memory?"
"Fireworks and s'mores! I grew up in a small city in New Jersey that is right across from midtown New York, and it's on the Hudson River. So every year from our city, we could sit at the top of the Palisades Cliffs on the Hudson River and watch the Macy's fireworks. There's something magical about fireworks mesmerized as a child and I just love watching them. Even now as an adult, I get really excited about fireworks, and there's nothing like a summer day just sitting out on the lawn or on a balcony, looking up in the sky and seeing a spectacular fireworks show.
I love s'mores. If I could roast marshmallows and eat them every day I would. Growing up in the city, my cousins and I would roast s'more over the stove fire and pretend like we were out in the woods. The melted gooey marshmallows combined with chocolate and graham crackers is so yummy."

Viernes 28 de junio, Washington (CNN): La Corte Suprema dijo que el viernes revisará en la decisión del presidente Donald Trump que pone fin a un programa de la administración Obama que protege a cientos de miles de inmigrantes indocumentados que vinieron a los E.U. de niños, dando una decisión potencialmente en medio la elección presidencial de 2020.

Las redadas de ICE continuan. ¡conozca sus derechos!
|

¿Qué hacer si ICE le toca la puerta?
|
El 23 de junio, el Presidente publicó mediante twitter el siguiente mensaje mientras que los medios y las redes sociales estaban siendo inundados con alertas de que los agentes de ICE iban a realizar redadas.
“Quiero darle a los Demócratas la oportunidad de negociar rápidamente unos simples cambios al Asilo y lagunas legales. Con esto se va a arreglar la frontera sur, juntos, con la ayuda de que ahora nos está dando México. Probablemente no va a pasar, pero vale la pena intentar. ¡Dos semanas y las deportaciones comienzan!"
Un escenario en específico es que los agentes de ICE se aparezcan en su casa. De acuerdo con ACLU, es importante que tome nota de los siguientes pasos:
¿Qué hacer cuando la policía o ICE lleguen?
-Pregúnteles si son agentes de inmigración y para qué están ahí.
-Pida al agente u oficial que le muestre su placa o identificación a través de la ventana o la mirilla.
-Pregúnteles si tienen una orden firmada por el juez. Si le contestan que sí, pídales que se la pasen por debajo de la puerta o que se la muestren por la ventana para que usted pueda examinarla.
-No mienta o dé documentos falsos. No firme nada sin antes hablar con un abogado.
-No abra la puerta a menos que ICE le muestre una orden judicial de cateo u orden de arresto con el nombre de la persona que viva ahí con usted y/o en las áreas que serán registradas que aparezcan en la orden. Si no le muestran dicha orden, mantenga la puerta cerrada. Dígales: “No tienen mi consentimiento para entrar”.
-Si los agentes entran a la fuerza, no se resista. Si desea ejercer sus derechos dígales: “No tienen mi consentimiento para entrar o para registrar este predio. Estoy ejerciendo mi derecho de permanecer en silencio. Deseo hablar con un abogado lo más pronto posible”.
-Si está usted bajo libertad condicional (probation), el poder judicial sí está autorizado a entrar a su hogar.

En día 4 de julio, todos en América están celebrando el día en que nos convertimos en una nación independiente. ¡Qué mejor momento para celebrar su sueño americano y todas las oportunidades que implican convertirse en un ciudadano americano!
El proceso de convertirse en un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos puede ser complejo. Requiere de muchos pasos que requieren conocimiento de las leyes de Estados Unidos que determinan si es que califica para la ciudadanía. Sin embargo, naturalizarse vale la pena cuando uno acepta los beneficios y responsabilidades de ser un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos.

Postre Americano del Verano: S'mores
|
¿Necesita una idea de último minuto para un postre de 4 de julio?
¡La mejor de todas es ninguna otra que el S´more! El S´more es un clásico Americano para el verano. La mayoría de nuestros clientes se criaron fuera de los Estado Unidos y nunca han probado esta delicia. Deben añadirla a sus planes de 4 de julio tratar un s’more. Es el postre de verano favorito de Zaira, y estamos seguros de que, después de una mordida ¡será el suyo también!
Para hacer un S´more solo necesita lo siguiente:
-Malvaviscos
-Brochetas o Pinchos de la parilla
-Galletas Graham
-Barras de Chocolates Hersheys
-Una buena llama de fuego
¿Cómo se hace un S´more?
La respuesta más sencilla es que tienes que partir la galleta Graham a la mitad y poner las dos mitades en un plato. Pon encima un pedazo de chocolate que cubra cada galleta. Después caliente el malvavisco sobre el fuego y póngalo encima del las dos galletas con chocolate como si estuviera haciendo un emparedado/sándwich. Presione ligeramente todo y disfrútelo mientras esté caliente y derretido.

¡Ustedes lo pidieron y nosotros cumplimos! Durante el pasado fin de semana fuimos los anfitriones de 4 talleres de inmigración en Birmingham, Enterprise y Dothan, AL. En los talleres tuvimos la oportunidad de compartir información migración con la comunidad inmigrante, así como capacitación para los ministros religiosos.
Nuestra CEO, Zaira Solano trabaja frecuentemente como voluntaria con la Coalición por la Justicia Inmigrante de Alabama (ACIJ por sus siglas en inglés) para ofrecer estos talleres. “El 4 de julio significa libertad. Significa tener la capacidad de hacer lo que quieras en un país en el que prácticamente todo es posible. Creo que la libertad también significa libertad de elección. En América, tenemos el privilegio de tener tantas oportunidades y opciones en cuanto a dónde queremos estudiar, en qué queremos trabajar, qué queremos comer, cómo queremos pasar nuestro tiempo libre. Creo que es un gran privilegio."
"Cuando pienso acerca de la libertad, también pienso en todos los hombres y mujeres que defienden nuestra libertad a diario. Finalmente, también pienso en los inmigrantes que contribuyen a nuestra sociedad y a construir América”

Hemos trabajado muy duro esta primera mitad del año, así que vamos a ir a nadar, a relajarnos y ponernos al día con algunos libros que hemos estado queriendo leer pero que no hemos tenido tiempo. ¿Cuál es tu recuerdo favorito de 4 de julio?
"¡Fuegos artificiales y
s´mores!
Crecí en una pequeña ciudad en Nueva Jersey que está justo al otro lado del centro de Nueva York, justo en el río Hudson. Cada año desde nuestra ciudad nos sentábamos en los peñascos Palisades en el rio Hudson para ver los fuegos artificiales de Macy´s. Hay algo mágico acerca de los fuegos artificiales que como niña me fascinaban, me encantaba verlos. Incluso ahora como adulto me emocionan mucho. No hay nada como un día de verano sentada en el jardín o en el balcón viendo arriba hacia el cielo y ver un
show
espectacular de fuegos artificiales.
Adoro los
s´mores (malvavisco rostizado con una capa de chocolate entre dos pedazos de galleta Graham).
Si pudiera rostizar malvaviscos y comerlos todo el día, lo haría. De niña, mis primos y yo solíamos rostizar los malvaviscos en el fuego de la estufa e imaginábamos que estábamos en el bosque. Los malvaviscos derretidos combinados con chocolate y las galletas Graham eran tan ricos.”
