MESSAGE FROM
MAYOR RICHARD BRUNST
"Honeyeeeee"

Yesterday morning my wife screamed out to me "Honeyeeee" in a very distressed voice.

As I came rushing to see what happened I noticed that she was in the garage and had a worried look on her face. It seemed that a young skunk had crawled under the lawnmower situated in our garage. As my wife grabbed the handle of the lawnmower to use it, the skunk ran out and into a pile of tarps in the corner of the garage.

Well as we looked at each other, the thought came to mind, "What do we do now?" If I was to take a stick and push him out, I would get sprayed. If I pulled the tarps back to expose him, I could get sprayed. So we left the garage and went into the house.

As I researched it out on the internet, I learned that skunks do like the smell of citrus. As I had an orange and several limes in my refrigerator I pulled them out, cut them up, and proceeded to throw them next to where he was lying. I then opened the garage doors and went back into the house. A half hour later I came out and he was gone.

I learned that if you have a situation you wish to solve, you need to research a solution that will work. I relate that to the fact that we have an primary election coming up with ballots going out on July 23rd and the Primary election date of August 13th.

I refer to that as it is important for all of us to vote. To do that in an educated way, we all need to get to know the 11 candidates running for the 3 city council seats that are up for voting on in this election.

You can learn information on each candidate by going to orem.org/elections.  Also the City of Orem will be holding an election candidate meeting, which will be posted in the future. Plus the city has invited all candidates who wish to do so to be interviewed for a video that the city will put out on the city elections website to get to know the candidates even better.

It is important to have citizen engagement in the election process. To choose the best candidate for City Council that meets your requirements and is close to what your beliefs are, each of us will need to get to know and understand where each candidate sits on the issues.

So to make a wise choice it is important to do the work of knowing your candidates. I encourage us all to do so. Please take the time to do the research to get the best outcome.

SAVE THE BEES!
Did you know that bees are very important to your garden? They are pollinators & keep flowers & fruits blooming.
It is estimated that one third of the food that we consume daily relies on pollination mainly by bees.

Plants you can put in your yard specifically for bees:

  • Bee Balm
  • Lilac Bushes
  • Cone Flowers
  • Poppies
  • Sunflowers

Have you ever heard of a bee bath? You can easily make one (or buy one online ;))
Basically it is a shallow dish which you put pebbles or marbles into for the bees to rest on & fill with water so they can rest & rehydrate.

Water Conservation Tips and Resources from the Beautification Advisory Committee
Living in the 2nd driest state in the country necessitates a certain amount of personal responsibility when it comes to water conservation. Below are a few statistics from the EPA to help put the seriousness of the situation into perspective.

  • Outdoor water use accounts for more than 30 percent of total household water use, on average, but can be as much as 60 percent of total household water use in arid regions.
  • If the average sized lawn in the United States is watered for 20 minutes every day for 7 days, it’s like running the shower constantly for 4 days or taking more than 800 showers. That's equivalent to the amount of water needed for the average family to take 1 years’ worth of showers. • As much as 50 percent of the water we use outdoors is lost due to wind, evaporation, and runoff caused by inefficient irrigation methods and systems. A household with an automatic landscape irrigation system that isn't properly maintained and operated can waste up to 25,000 gallons of water annually.
  • When hiring a professional to install or audit your landscape irrigation system, be sure he or she is certified by a WaterSense labeled irrigation program. If the system is well managed, a household's irrigation water use can be reduced by 15 percent, or nearly 7,600 gallons of water, annually. That's the amount of water needed to take 480 showers.
City of Orem Critical Home Repair & Housing Rehabilitation Program
The City of Orem will provide homeowners grant and/or loan funding (depending on income and home value) up to $15,000 to repair critical damage to homes or eliminate specific and immediate hazards to health, safety, and/or sanitation.

Homeowners can also replace or repair windows, electrical, plumbing, fixtures, or roofs, paint exterior or interiors, do necessary remodeling, put in ADA improvements, and do additions (based on need).

The program will be available to all homeowners (single family, multi-family, and mobile homes) making less than 80 percent of the Area Median Income (based on HUD’s yearly MSA numbers) living in the City of Orem. For an application or to find out more about this program, contact Kena Jo Mathews at kjmathews@orem.org or call 801-229-7023.
