Happy Training!

The heat is rising and so are our Tri Club monthly training totals! Take a look at our Presidents message as he talks about training in the heat. Let's be smart about heat training while we keep our monthly totals rising!

During the month of June we swam 131,186 yards, biked 5,318.72 miles and ran 1,309.77 miles! Keep up the great work ! Our July totals (see below) are looking strong. Don't forget to add your mileage to our running total on the FB page! Let's see if we can out swim, bike, and run our June totals!

This month the Tri Club was able to host our swim time trial with respect to the recommended guidelines advised by the CDC to ensure the safety of our members. The time trial results are listed below. We had a great turn out! This was a great opportunity to get some baseline date and use it as a tool for improvement if you have not been swimming in a while.

Speaking of improvement, do not forget to check out this months Triathlon Talk section to see some awesome swim tips to help you improve, in addition to "Race Mistakes We Have Made." All great resources to help you improve as an overall athlete.

All great things must come to end. Please see the groups FB page as we wrapped up our Seven Summits Challenge! Great job to all the members who eneded the challenge by scaling Mt. Everest! It was definitely a burn out on the legs!

Get to know our members! This month our President sits down with four of our members and they talk tris. You never know what you may learn!

We are working hard to schedule our race series for this year. As more information becomes available, we will continue to update our members. As you gear up for the series races, get gear ready! Seven Summits Challenge

The 7 Summits Challenge is still going strong as we worked our way through week 5 by climbing Denali (also known as Mount McKinley, its former official name is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level.

This past week we entered our sixth week by tackling Aconcagua, which is a mountain in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes mountain range, in Mendoza Province, Argentina. It is the highest mountain in the Americas and the highest outside of Asia, being the highest in both the Southern and Western hemispheres with a summit elevation of 6,960.8 metres (22,837 ft).

Week 6 wraps up our last week as we proceed to the final week of our Seven Summits Challenge! Get those legs ready as we conclude with Mount Everest! Best of luck to everyone brave enough to take on the challenge!

Check out the 7 Summits Challenge on our FB page for more information.
Swim Time Trail

On July 11th, the Las Vegas Tri Club hosted a swim time trial. Members had the option of swimming laps that consisted of 650 yards per lap. Some opted to complete 1, 2, or 3 laps! Either way it was great to get out and see everyone out there. Check out the photos from our amazing participants on our Facebook page !

A huge thank you to our kayak support: Tony Taylor and Teresa Sheppard Terlizzi. Check out the results below!

Heat Training

Summer is here! And the 100+ F temps have arrived as well … it sure is hot. Many of you are still training – maybe you still have a race on the calendar that might happen; or maybe you are enjoying training just to stay in shape.

What are some tips for training in the heat? The key to training in the heat is maintaining core temperature. Your core temperature is probably right around 98.6º F. What is interesting is that your body will try to keep core temperature right around this number – that is called maintaining ‘homeostasis’. We all know that a high core temperature is bad (e.g., when you’re sick and running a ‘fever’) … and we feel terrible. Your body will balance factors that cause core temperature to increase with factors that cause core temperature to decrease.

What factors influence increasing core temperature? Muscle contraction is a key factor – the more your muscles contract, the more heat is generated. Your body needs to get rid of this heat (in a hot environment) to avoid core temperature from increasing. Another obvious factor is the environment – radiation from the sun, reflective heat from the ground. When air temperature is greater than body temperature, we start to gain heat … which can cause core temperature to increase.

Exercise in the heat Tip #1: Slow down. This may happen naturally … your brain is always monitoring core temperature, and you may subconsciously start slowing down so that you generate less heat through muscle contraction. In any case, expect to train at a slower pace in the heat.

When your core temperature starts to go up, your body has some mechanisms that can bring core temperature down. For example, sweating is a great mechanism to keep core temperature from rising. To allow the sweat mechanism to work properly, you need to be hydrated properly. This is why we drink during exercise – to make sure we have enough fluid inside us that the sweat mechanism works. If you don’t have enough fluid to allow for the sweat mechanism to work, your core temperature will go up … and your performance will go down!

Exercise in the heat Tip #2: Hydrate properly. This is an important topic … and one that I’ll need to write something separate on! But know that you should figure out your sweat rate as well as what amount of fluid you can absorb per hour (this is not easy … but important).

There are other tips that you can do when you consider exercising in the heat is about maintaining core temperature. For example:
  • Wear clothing that covers the skin from sun exposure (but the clothing can’t interfere with the sweat mechanism).
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible (e.g., shade, exercise before sunrise or after sunset).
  • Pour water on you and let it evaporate off you.
  • Ice in the hat.
  • Bike with a camelback.
  • Freeze your bottles the night before.

It is possible to get a good exercise session in the heat – but you’ll probably be going slower than you normally would. The key is to manage your core temperature – minimize generating and absorbing heat and maximize letting your body get rid of heat.

The good news is: your body can have a positive training response when you adapt to training in the heat that can carry over to improved race-day performance. So embrace the summer training sessions! But be smart … stay cool … maintain your core temp. Bad things happen when core temp increases.
