The current Public Health Order on Gatherings and Events restricts the public from attending Council meetings in person. Property tax payments are due July 2, 2021. Property tax payments and completed Home Owner Grants (claimed through the Province of BC, if applicable) are due no later than July 2, 2021 to avoid penalty.

Postmarks are not accepted as proof of payment.

A 1% penalty applies on any outstanding balance after July 2nd and a 9% penalty applies on any outstanding balance after September 30th. The District has no authority to waive or modify these penalty amounts, which are required by law.

On Friday, June 18, 2021, the District of Lantzville (District) and Snaw-naw-as Nation (Nation) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on strengthening our government-to-government relationship, furthering dialogue, and working together in the best interests of both of our communities. This MOU is the culmination of discussions that began in December 2020 when the District and the Nation set an intention to develop a framework for working together. Under the MOU, the District and the Nation will establish a Joint Working Group within 30 days to work towards achieving the goals set out in the MOU. The MOU anticipates cooperation on issues such as land use planning, waste and water servicing, community amenities, parks and recreation, transportation and access, and development. The Joint Working Group will be tasked with exploring these and other issues and reporting back to both Councils on how best to collaborate. The District of Lantzville Economic Development Officer (EDO) will be conducting a business walk during the week of July 5th to 9th.

The walkabout is being performed as part of the District’s annual business retention and expansion initiatives, and will include a short survey with three to four questions. Survey results will be aggregated and anonymous, in order for the District to better understand business’ needs and to determine measures to support them. Businesses that are not contacted, or home based businesses that do not have a storefront location, will be invited to complete an online survey later this summer. If you would like to ensure your business is included in the survey, please contact the EDO at ahutchison@lantzville.ca.

Things are warming up here on Vancouver Island, which means we need to be ready for the upcoming wildfire season. With warm weather comes long, dry hot days, which also means there’s a higher risk of wildfire in our environments. The good thing is, there are lots of actions you can take to protect your homes and from wildfire! Firesmart 101 is an online program offered by FireSmart Canada, and a great place to start learning about the FireSmart Program. You’ll be informed about simple tasks around your home that can help make your space more resilient in the face of wildfire. The results of this survey will help guide regional initiatives and programs for freshwater in RDN municipalities (includes Lantzville) and Electoral Areas.

Do you have community safety, traffic or speed concerns? Be sure to let the RCMP know! Report emergencies to 911 or to report non-emergency incidents, call the Nanaimo detachment at 250.754.2345. If the District of Lantzville receives correspondence reporting community safety, traffic or speed concerns, these are also shared with the RCMP. 

The RCMP recently provided an overview and update on traffic enforcement initiatives underway in the District of Lantzville in response to reported traffic and speed concerns. RCMP Inspector Fletcher reported on the new resource allocation that added one Provincial position to the Traffic Unit enabling routine traffic patrols and speeding enforcement that were previously not available to the District.

Outdoor burning (including campfires) is NOT permitted on private and public property in the District of Lantzville. This means that any open flame of woody material, use of tiki torches, fireworks, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and Category 2 & 3 open fires are prohibited. Campfires on private and public property, and outdoor fireplaces have been added to the outdoor burning ban issued in June. Only devices using fuel that does not create sparks/embers (propane, natural gas, camp fuel or briquettes) will be allowed. All outdoor burning including incinerators and campfires are strictly prohibited. Please be aware that forest conditions are extremely dry.

Under the watering restrictions, in Stage 2, sprinkling is permitted between the hours of 7:00 am to 10:00 am OR 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm for a maximum of 2 hours every other day on the following days:

Sprinkling includes watering lawns, ornamental shrubs, flowers and trees and use of pop-up spray, rotors and sprinklers. Putting in a new lawn? Apply for a new lawn permit. The following are permitted at any time in Stage 2: hand-watering (trees, shrubs, vegetables) drip irrigation, and micro irrigation (check regularly for leaks); washing vehicles, boats, and houses (siding) if using a hose with a shutoff device; filling fountains, pools, or hot tubs; pressure washing walkways, driveways and siding. Vegetable gardens and fruit trees are exempt from all watering restrictions but watering in the early morning or in the evening is recommended. 

On your garbage, food waste, and recycling collection day, make sure your carts are at the curb by 8:00 am! Carts must be spaced 1 metre apart and free from obstructions 3 metres above. Not sure what goes where? Click here to learn more.

Be animal aware and store your garbage and food waste carts in a secure, locked area with the lids securely closed, and don’t put your carts at the curb until the morning of your collection day. Use a spray bottle filled with a bleach solution to deodorize the lid and exterior of your food waste cart to prevent food odours from attracting bears and other wildlife. If you see a bear in a residential area, stay calm. Bears are usually just passing through the area and if no food is available they will move on. Keep away from the bear, warn others, and bring children and pets into the house. If the bear appears threatening, persistent or aggressive, call the Conservation Officer at 1.877.952.7277.

Lantzville Commercial Core Revitalization Project on Lantzville Road between Dickinson Road and Caillet Road  

Construction continues on road upgrades on Lantzville Road between Dickinson and Caillet Roads. The project, funded through grants, includes separated multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, street trees, raingardens, banner poles, seating areas, and shared on-street parking areas. The contractor (David Stalker Excavating Ltd.) has notified properties affected and provided contact and construction schedule information. Please obey all traffic control; there will be temporary traffic disruptions, detours and periodic parking restrictions. Due to construction of storm sewer upgrades, Huddlestone Road between Lantzville Road and Bayview Road will be closed to regular traffic, with access to local traffic only, during the course of construction in July. Working hours will be Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Pedestrians and cyclists will have controlled access during the construction hours. The Huddlestone Park parking lot will be closed to the public; use the Lantzville School Road tennis court parking lot. The contractor (Leuco Construction) will notify any properties affected by road closures one week prior, and 24 hours in advance for any driveway interruptions in order for alternate arrangements to be made.

Establishing a Business Licence Bylaw is a Council strategic priority and a foundational action in the District’s Economic Development Strategy (2018). Watch for information in the mail and view the bylaw, background information and notice on the District’s website available before Council considers public input and third reading at the July 21, 2021 Council meeting. At a subsequent meeting, Council will consider adoption of Business Licence Bylaw No. 167, 2021.

Fire engines are bigger than most personal vehicles. Is your driveway large enough and cleared of overhanging obstruction such as low hanging branches, overhead wires or other objects that may impede the access of a fire engine?

Do you own or operate a Lantzville-based business? The Lantzville Business Association (LBA) is a newly formed non-profit created to assist and promote businesses in Lantzville. The LBA’s goal is to work with and for Lantzville businesses to build connections, share information and ideas, and offer events, promotions and advocate on behalf of the local business community.

“Support creation of a business association” was one of the foundational actions in the Lantzville Economic Development Strategy.

Currently, the District is not able to accept bookings for the use of Huddlestone Park or the Pavilion due to limited staffing resources required to monitor and disinfect park equipment and facilities. We anticipate bookings for Huddlestone Park will commence following Step-4 of BC’s Restart plan, when it is expected the status of personal gatherings and social contact will return to normal.

Huddlestone Park remains open to the public subject to following COVID-19 restrictions:

When normal operations resume (Step 4), the District will facilitate bookings which will require a $20 booking fee. Although a group may book the park, it does not provide exclusive use, and individual members of the community are free to use District parks at any time.
