July 2021 Newsletter
|
|
My April 2020 Newsletter included an article entitled Inspirational Harp Stories, featuring emails I had received from three customers describing how the harp was helping them cope with the pandemic. This month's Share Your Harp Joy article below is "Volume 2." The introduction that I wrote last year is still applicable today:
I love my customers, and I enjoy hearing their harp stories. Sometimes I get an email that totally makes my day! I hope that these three examples inspire you, as they have inspired me.
But first . . . an announcement about a new product from Dusty Strings!

NEW String Buttons by Dusty Strings!
|
|
Last month, I talked about broken strings. This month, I'm proud to announce a brand new way to install new strings on your harp: String Buttons!
To all the harpists out there who have struggled with tying the harper's knot when changing a string, the folks at Dusty Strings heard your cries of frustration, and are thrilled to finally be able to share "The Harper's NOT!" . . . also known as String Buttons!
|
|
We know tying the traditional knot with a slippery string and tiny toggle spline is difficult or painful for many people, sometimes to the point of near impossibility, and that means a broken harp string can be a huge source of stress and anxiety. We've attacked this problem at various points over the years, looking for a string anchoring method that would be easier on the hands, would be relatively simple to use, and would hold firm without causing string breakage or loss of tone. It was a more difficult journey than we thought it would be, but we think String Buttons check all the boxes.
String Buttons are made from black Delrin acetal, which is a hard plastic. They are 1/2" in diameter and about 1/8" thick. They come in a pack of 12 with an instruction card, a link to the video instructions, and an extra, quick-reference instruction card that you can keep handy or pass on to a friend.

This first video is a fun "infomercial" by the silly folks at Dusty Strings.
Their second video shows how to use the String Buttons when changing harp strings.

Share Your Harp Joy - Volume 2

ELECTION DAY - by Teresa L.
I voted early by mail in last November's election. On election day, I happened to drive by my local polling place and noticed that the line of people waiting to vote was over four blocks long! I drove home, got my Fullsicle harp, and went back. I sat under a big tree outside the front door and started to play. I could immediately see and feel an improvement in the mood of the people in line. They actually started smiling! A lot of people stopped by after they voted and thanked me for "making their day."

VACCINATIONS - by Melissa W.
When I got my first Covid vaccination in March, I was surprised to see one of my former harp students administering the shots. It was so fun to see her again! She said, "You should bring your harp and come play for us." I'm pretty sure she was kidding, but I took her at her word. So, when I returned for my second shot, I brought my harp and played for over three hours! The response was so positive and uplifting that I have been back about a dozen times since then. I feel honored to be able to bring harp joy to people during these stressful times.

THE POST OFFICE - by Carla Carpenter
I live in Utah, in a very small town of 250-300 people. In fact, the post office sits in our front yard! We see many people come and go throughout the day. During COVID, I wondered how I could help lift people’s spirits. With an amplifier in the front yard, a long extension cord, and a small microphone attached to the harp, I have been able to play from the comfort of my living room and share music with my community. One lady brought her elderly mother with her to pick up mail one day and stayed 30 minutes just to enjoy the music. It’s a great motivator to practice if you know people are counting on you! Thanks to Sylvia’s easy-to-play arrangements, townspeople have enjoyed harp selections from Romantic Songs, 50 Christmas Carols, John Denver, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Favorites from the 50s, Happy, the theme from Up, and more! It is fun to share my love of harp music with others!
