BOOK OF THE MONTH, JULY 2021

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Who was Betty Collier? Who were the first pioneers to settle on Marco Island? In 1870, the Colliers settled on Marco Island.

Follow the journey of William and Betty Collier from North Carolina to Cedar Key, Florida and on to Marco Island. The reason they settled on a deserted island may become clear. Mr. Thorpe, a surveyor described the island and Henderson Creek area as "a pond full of monstrous alligators surrounded by a cypress swamp: impractical."

Author Barbara Malta,

As a Victorian re-enactor for nearly 20 years, Barbara Ann Malta was asked to portray Betty Collier. She was given her birth and death dates and access to William Thomas Collier's diary. From diary entries, research about and general knowledge of Victorian women, Barbara gave Betty her voice in the form of this historic narrative, based on events in her life and in the lives of pioneer women.

Writer's Tips

Writers that are trying to improve their craft find that POV, Point of View is one of the hardest skills to tackle. Most commercial fiction today is written in Deep POV. What the heck is that? Deep POV, sometimes called Close POV brings the story close to the reader. It is the ultimate in showing instead of telling.

I found one of the best books to help me learn deep POV is a little book by Lisa Hall-Wilson called Method Acting for Writers. If you are trying to write and are struggling with deep POV, give this little book a try.

Melody's best blog recommendation: I’ve read dozens of “how-to-write” books by everyone out there, Janice Hardy has the teaching gift; a knack for making a writing principle simple and clear, providing tons of examples to illustrate her point(s). It’s my go-to when I am trying to understand a concept or need a refresher. Fiction University, Click Here
