Dear Friends of the BABC Northern California,
I hope you had an enjoyable July 4th weekend. With summer finally upon us, it feels very good to be getting out again and attending small in-person gatherings and I'm certainly looking forward to attending some BABC events as our programs start up again - more on that later!
Still virtual, on June 30th, we held the 65th Annual General Meeting of the BABC Northern California on Zoom, and hopefully the last time in this format. We were joined by over 30 members who learned how we have fared during the pandemic, both financially, and as an organization. It goes without saying that myself and the Board are extremely grateful for the incredible support we received from our members and wider community. I'm pleased to say that the future looks bright so long as the State continues to beat the virus and move forward with its re-opening plans. We are starting to plan in-person events for the fall, including the BABC Annual Christmas Luncheon. Save the Date! - Friday, December 10th at the fabulous Fairmont Hotel.
The Annual General Meeting is also an occasion to vote in the Board of Directors and I'd like to offer my congratulations and thanks to all directors new, re-elected and incumbent who will serve for the 2021-2023 term. Click here to see the Directors on our website.
Please join us this week for our first in-person event at Werqwise in over 15 months. We are excited to be able to catch up with you all. July 15th - 6-8pm. You can register here. If you are vaccinated, you will not be required to wear a mask. If you are not vaccinated, please do wear a mask.
I would like to direct you to the “Champions of Trade Stories of Transatlantic Success” produced by the London Chapter in partnership with the US Embassy in London. This virtual journey spotlights transatlantic success stories and the people behind them, celebrating those who have made the UK-US corridor a key part of their personal and professional growth narratives. Click here to access the report. Do you have a UK-US business related story you would like us to highlight? Contact us to share your news.
Finally, I am sure many of you were disappointed by the result yesterday’s Euro 2020 final but having waited 55 years for England to reach a major tournament final I think the England fans among us can all be proud of what the team achieved and proud of our players, especially those who had to step up to the ultimate, dreaded responsibility of taking one of those penalties! Well done England!
Sincerely,
Stephen Wares

Provide Backpacks for Raphael House Students
|
|
|
Students in the SFUSD and Bay Area school districts will be returning to in-person learning this upcoming school year. Raphael House needs the support of our community to help our students start the school year prepared and confident!
Low-income families living paycheck-to-paycheck must prioritize essentials like rent, groceries, and health care expenses, and often struggle to purchase school supplies. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated those obstacles and the effects continue to be felt throughout our community. Raphael House’s annual Back-To-School Drive provides children with supplies to succeed in school and allows parents to focus on maintaining their financial stability.
This year, our goal is to provide 200 students with new backpacks and to raise $5,000 through our Back-to-School Fund! We know we can do it with your help!

Press Release: US Investors are Confident in the UK, but Concerns Over Future UK-EU Relations Persist
LONDON – July,12, 2021 – Today, BritishAmerican Business and Bain & Company launched the inaugural Transatlantic Confidence Index. The Index measures the confidence of US companies active in the UK, including their views on investing in UK operations over the next two to three years and in the overall health of the UK’s relationship with both the US and the EU.
BritishAmerican Business and Bain & Company surveyed 68 large cap American companies representing a combined 3,500 years of business experience and employing more than 275,000 individuals across every region of the UK.
The report can be found here, and the full analysis can be accessed here.

London/New York - July 9th, 2021 – In response to today’s report that G20 finance ministers are preparing to approve a global tax plan that would allow for the UK to de-apply the Digital Services Tax (DST), BAB’s Director for Policy & Trade, Emanuel Adam, said:
“If what the reporting suggests is true, we would very much welcome that. Since the UK first discussed the introduction of a Digital Services Tax, BAB has argued that the issue would be best addressed through a multilateral solution that guarantees a high level of consistency across markets (see BAB’s White Paper here).
It would be timely to have a solution to be found at this time given the threat of U.S. punitive tariffs on UK products, whose introduction is currently paused. As we always said and continue to say, punitive tariffs don’t make good trade policy. Agreements between governments to solve a global issue does.”

BAB Statement on Quarantine-Free Travel to the UK for Fully Vaccinated Travellers from Amber List Countries
London/New York - July 8th, 2021 – In response to the news that fully vaccinated passengers returning from amber list countries to the UK won’t have to quarantine after 19 July, BritishAmerican Business published the following statement:
“This is a step in the right direction and we welcome the UK Government’s decision to remove quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated residents returning to the UK from amber list countries.
“We do note, however, that U.S. residents, whether they are citizens or British residents who were vaccinated in the U.S., would not be able to take advantage of the change from the 19th of July. This once again highlights the need for our travel-related certificates to be mutually recognised and interoperable.
“We strongly support the Government’s stated ambition to extend the approach to all vaccinated passengers from the U.S. later this summer. We will continue to work with both the U.S. and UK Governments to find ways to safely reopen our travel corridor which currently remains effectively closed for business on both sides.”
