President’s Message

Dear fellow AFP-GLAC Members and Friends,

Summer is in full swing and so is your board. We have some great programming scheduled for you in the weeks and months ahead. A Virtual Advanced Executive Forum is set for August 17th from 10:30 to 12:00 and Cassie Carter has been recruiting an outstanding panel to discuss succession planning, effectively on-boarding new staff for long term retention, and satisfaction in your role and job. All of these are topics of growing interest in our industry. We also have a new member orientation on August 19th from 12:00 to 1:00. Please be sure to register and participate. It’s a great way to get up to speed on all that AFP GLAC and AFP Global have to offer.  Another session in a very successful series of IDEA programs is, “Positioning You and Your Team for Success,” and it’s set for August 31st from 10:30 to 12:00. These are always well-attended and very informative. I hope you can make time to participate. Finally, on September 9th is another Virtual Emerging Leaders Event, scheduled from 11:00 to 12:00. I’ve attended and always hear from members about how valuable they feel these programs are to those seeking to advance their practice and careers. Please make plans join us.

Of course, the big event on our calendar is the National Philanthropy Day Conference and Awards on November 5th from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. Our theme is, “A Brave New World of Fundraising” and the committee has already landed some wonderful presenters and honorees. This is our chapter’s biggest event of the year and it’s an event that everyone wants to be there. Attend, learn and celebrate with us as we sharpen our skills and honor those in our community who have made a very real and positive difference in our lives and the lives of those we serve.

In addition to attending this and the other scheduled events, I want to encourage you and your organization to consider supporting the chapter’s efforts with a sponsorship. There are a variety of opportunities that will fit any budget. NPD sponsorships range from $8,000 to $250. You can learn more about these levels and everything in between by viewing our Sponsorship Opportunities. I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you and your organization.

The chapter has other ways to help through the Partners in Philanthropy (PIP) program. As you know, our chapter has long stood for the professionalization of our industry and in my 22 years of membership, I’ve seen great strides in that regard. We have promoted ethical and effective fundraising through education, training, mentoring, research, credentialing, and advocacy. I hope you and your organization will help us continue this important work by becoming a Partner in Philanthropy. Visit our Partners in Philanthropy page to learn how your gift of $300 will support our work and bring marketing recognition to your organization.

I would also like to congratulate our IDEA Committee for their tremendous work and contributions in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion within our chapter and the Greater Los Angeles Philanthropic Community. Our club just received its certificate from AFP-Global honoring our chapter for outstanding achievements in this area. The certificate is proudly displayed within the IDEA section of our newsletter. Congratulations Executive Board member and IDEA Chair Lisa Baxter, Danielle Lara and the entire committee!

I’m excited to share with you our chapter’s 2021 Ten Star Gold Award Certificate. This is the result not only of our efforts in the past year to support the strategic direction of AFP, but also of the work AFP GLAC has done over many years. You see, I believe this chapter fosters a culture of excellence, and consistently demonstrates a dedication to ethical practice in and the professionalization of our industry. I hope you share my pride in this achievement and in all the Ten Star Awards our chapter has earned. I also hope you will join me in thanking our leaders and members, past and present, who have contributed so much to our continued success.

There are lots of ways you can help through your service and support. Please look into it and reach out to me or any member of the board, if you have a question. You are always welcome to call me on my cell phone at (909) 262-4491 or to send me an email at michael.driebe@methodisthospital.orgAs always, thanks for your membership in AFP GLAC. I hope you’ll make the most of it by engaging with us and getting involved. You’ll be glad you did.

Best regards,
Mike Driebe, MSLM, CFRE
Chapter President

July Membership Spotlight
Jennifer Ellspermann

Jennifer currently works as the Development Director for the Torrance-South Bay YMCA. She is passionate about her work—from providing 10,000 meals a month to senior South Bay residents to a safely-distanced learning environment for the youth of essential workers—and she has loved seeing the connection between funding and positive impact in the lives of her community.

She joined AFP-GLAC in 2018, and she has since volunteered and chaired the Partners In Philanthropy (PIP) Committee which helps secure sponsorships for our AFP-GLAC events, including the National Philanthropy Day Conference. She now serves as our Board Secretary. When asked about her time with AFP-GLAC, she said, "AFP-GLAC has provided invaluable experiences and networking opportunities. I have found volunteering to be the most rewarding experience because it has allowed me to engage with other fundraisers and gain professional development."

We are so thankful for her service to our GLAC community and the broader southern California community. Thank you, Jennifer!
