HOUSATONIC COUNCIL SUMMER CAMP RETURNS

As the pages continue to flip in our calendars, we quickly realize we are halfway through 2021. While June is a great month as youth get to say, “School’s Out for Summer”, thoughts turn to Goshen and Shelton for July.

CAMP STRANG staff are preparing for an exciting summer as we return to the outdoors. Camp Strang will be opening its doors for its 60th summer season. Youth are currently packing their bags for their own exciting week. The staff will be in training and putting the final touches as they prepare for a summer of merit badges, and FUN! We hear our neighbors are looking forward to hearing the songs and laughter of the Dining Hall. Camp Strang will be led by Camp Director Tom Hemstreet, and Program Director Dan Costa.

DAY CAMP staff is also preparing for their three-week program with staff attending training, setting up stations, and creating some “Weird Science”.  We are looking forward to a fun Cub Scout Summer under the leadership of Camp Director Al “Eyestein” Palumbo and Program Director Jason “Professor Fun” Mayo.

CONGRATULATION TO...

CUB SCOUT / COUNCIL ALUMNI - The Best Family who had the opportunity to fish on West Side Pond during a Guided fishing trip with Armand Fortier in his bass boat. After placing a winning bid during the Housatonic Council Alumni "Raise the Roof" fundraiser for the Training Center. Here are some photos of the fun.

Armand Fortier is a competitive bass angler. Look at the form our Cub Scout now displays casting, and it looks like he learned a thing or two.

TROOP 3, DERBY enjoyed a busy May. The troop stayed at Camp Strang and continued their preparation of the Mohawk Campsite for this summer by gathering and cutting wood for the woodshed. They took a hike to Nodine’s Smokehouse for lunch and went fishing in West Side Pond. Four patrols participated in the Housatonic Council Spring Camporee May 21 – 23, with the Fried Chicken Apocalypse Patrol placing 1st at the Camporee.

Ten members of the troop completed their swim test at Derby Veterans Memorial pool as they prepare for their BSA Florida Sea Base sailing trek in the Florida Keys.  This month’s theme was automotive and traveling. The Scouts participated in a Derby History Scavenger Hunt in the downtown Derby. The Troop welcomed a new member, from Pack 28 Shelton.

Scouts from the troop continue to plant, weed, and water the community garden. Youth planted geraniums at 30 graves of Troop 3 alumni in 6 cemeteries. The scouts conducted their annual memorial service at the Oak Cliff Cemetery grave site of Edmund D. Strang. Matthew Pinto represented Troop 3 at the Derby-Shelton Memorial Service at Shelton City Hall by leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Troop 3, Pack 3, and Venture Crew 33 marched in the Derby-Shelton Memorial Day Parade.

TROOP 28, SHELTON – The weekend of June 18-19 held a campout at Camp Strang where they went fishing and relaxed by the camp waterfront. They made venison tacos for dinner and slept in Chesapeake, their summer campsite. On Saturday they held a troop shoot with rifle and shotgun and had a troop picnic with hamburgers, hot dogs, and venison sliders. Can’t wait for the next troop shoot!!!!!!

TROOP 55, SHELTON participated 2021 Derby-Shelton Memorial Day Parade.
