The ADA is Turning 32 and We're Celebrating
July 26th marks the 32nd Anniversary of the passage of the American's with Disabilities Act. Signed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, the ADA is perhaps the most sweeping civil rights legislation since the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

To celebrate Disability:IN North Carolina is hosting Everybody Works in NC "From Murphy to Manteo," from 11am to noon EDT.

A virtual event, Everybody Works in NC "From Murphy to Manteo" illustrates the diverse forms of disability employment and inclusion through a combination of exciting vignettes and artistic performances by North Carolinians with disabilities.

For those who are unfamiliar with North Carolina geography; Murphy is the Western-most community located in the mountains of North Carolina while Manteo is the Eastern-most community on the coast.

Everybody Works in NC “From Murphy to Manteo” will be a virtual event, highlighting the vibrant range of disability inclusion throughout North Carolina’s business community.

Come join us for fun and celebration on July 26th from 11-12 noon!

The ADA Celebration event is free however registration is required to attend.
CommunAbility:
HBCU Convenes Advisory Group
The CommunAbility:DI-NC HBCU Program is well underway to serving students at all 10 historically black colleges and universities throughout our state.

With the advisory group set to begin regular meetings later this month, Disability:IN North Carolina staff are hard at work designing curriculum tailored to student leaders at each of the HBCUs. With support and feedback from the advisory group, staff will be designing recruitment plans for these positions and setting core infrastructure to support the unique needs of each campus while ensuring cohesion and quality across the board once the semester begins.

By necessity, our first area will be recruiting and training student leaders. As such we will be looking for students with disabilities who have a strong interest in growing their own facilitation and mentoring skills as well as an interest in supporting others to succeed professionally. We are also eager to find students that have an expressed interest in working at the intersection of disability and race.

Our aim is that these student leaders will become the primary point of contact for the mentees at each campus. As such, they will take the primary lead in facilitating group training as well as supporting the mentors in navigating any challenges that may come up with their individual mentees.

We are excited to see the first pieces of infrastructure taking shape and are eager to receive critical feedback and refinement from the leadership of the advisory group.
