Happy July!

We are approaching the sleepy days of summer, looking forward to ice cream and warm breezes. As New Haven slips into the dog days, we want to give our loyal library users a peek at our

schedule for summer hours. Although there may be some changes to this, you can always find the most recent information on our (publicly accessible -- you do not need to have a Facebook account to see it!) Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheInstituteLibrary.

JULY – closed Saturdays

There is no Jazz night on July 1 or July 8.

July Story Sharing is in Edgerton Park

AUGUST – closed Saturdays

The library will be also be CLOSED the weeks of August 8th – 12th and August 15th – 19 th . The Sew Sew Social, Jazz Night, and Story Sharing are expected to occur unless re-scheduled by the organizer.

You can count on us to be back to business as usual the day after Labor Day!

Story Sharing at The Institute Library 

Second Thursdays | 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Story Sharing meets the SECOND THURSDAY of the month. Join the Institute Library Story Sharing group on Thursday, July 14th, at 7:00 p.m. This month, the group will be meeting at Edgerton Park! You can park near the main entrance on Edgehill Road opposite Edgehill

Terrace, enter the park on foot, bear right along the road by the carriage house, and you

will find us.We suggest bringing a folding chair and bug repellent. Also please note that we cannot guarantee access to toilet facilities while in the Park. If you have any questions please reach out to Arnie Pritchard (apritchard01@snet.net). See you there!

Gallery @ The Institute Library

Summer 2022

Our curator, Martha Lewis, is working on building a new exhibit for the Gallery: DECOYS & MIMICS. As of this writing, there is still time to submit! This is open to ALL AGES, ALL BACKGROUNDS- anyone may submit. It is

FREE and EASY to participate! How to do it: take any book you have, cover it with blank paper and make it your own!

Draw, paint, collage, print -- however YOU would like to make it.

The book should be IMAGINARY, YOUR ORIGINAL IDEA….

 Is it a mystery?

 A memoir?

 Sci-Fi?

Then: wrap it up carefully, and include with it your name, age, any comments you may have and your contact info including email, mailing address and phone number

and mail/deliver it to: The Institute Library, Attn: Gallery/Decoys and Mimics, 847 Chapel Street, New Haven CT 06510.

Notes on Reading: 

We noticed early in the summer that our MYSTERY section is seeing more traffic than it has in a long while, and that people are going deep into the stacks to revisit some great writers. Rex Stout and Reginald Hill. Maybe this shouldn't surprise us, but it does. We saw in the Wall Street Journal that the Youth of America are rediscovering the works of Agatha Christie, which came as no surprise to us, because, honestly, the kids are not stupid, and with recent movies of Christie novels, well.... everyone knows that a movie of a book is a gateway to the book.

Is there someone who you've been thinking you should re-read? A mystery writer everyone tells you you'd love who you've finally got time to explore? Ask us if we've got anything you want on hand: we'll be happy to set you up with some quiet, portable diversions from doom scrolling. 

And a postscript from the Operations Manager:

Unbeknownst to me, back in May -- this was brought to my attention on June 30th -- the website Messy Nessy Chic, which has long been a fun favorite for some of us, published an essay on the charms of card catalogs. Imagine our surprise when we started reading the piece only to find The Institute Library discussed! You could have knocked us over with a library membership card. With some of our programs on brief summer hiatuses in July, things will be quieter here. We're going to embrace our summer breaks as we get them, and catch up on some reading. While I do notice, as I said, a number of our members are going deep into the stacks for murder mysteries, I'm reading grim stuff on white nationalism in America today, and also brushing up on my writing skills by reading Dreyer's English. There is no connection between these selections. I am also reading a work by the British writer Ethelind Fearon, How to Keep Pace with Your Daughter, which is a delight that someone should bring back into print here in the US. 

We're thinking about fall programming... One of our members has queried me as to whether or not members of the community here would like to meet once a month or so to play hearty games of Scrabble or similar. If this appeals to you -- perhaps you're a NYT Spelling Bee or Wordle addict? -- drop me a line and I'll pass on the word (*rimshot*). Similarly: I am trying to remember who it was that approached me about starting a new poetry series. Was it you? If it was, get in touch!
