Large Institutions Moving Intentionally to Engage Small and Minority Businesses in their Real Estate and Facilities Projects | |
|
Over the last 3 years, Philadelphia’s largest institutions have moved intentionally to engage small and minority businesses in their development plans. Institutions such as Penn, Penn Medicine, CHOP, Jefferson University, and Wexford have made notable strides in the areas of real estate and construction to engage and hire minority firms. The leadership teams at Penn (Anne Papageorge); Jefferson University (Clayton Mitchell); and CHOP (Donald Moore), have engaged with other organizations such as the Economy League’s PAGE Real Estate and Construction Committee; the Greater Philadelphia Chamber’s Diversity Collaborative; the Enterprise Center; the Minority Chambers, local advocates; and other organizations to source and develop relationships with local and minority businesses. According to Chris Kern, the newly minted Executive Director of Design and Construction at Penn, “building relationships, making connections, developing capacity and talent is a part of our jobs”. BFW CEO Blane Stoddart adds, “we have been advocates for over 10 years in the diversity and inclusion (DEI) space…..now as we grow, we must transform to become dependable subject matter experts consultants/project managers that can compete in the open marketplace”.
We seem to be at an inflection point that could change the history of the region as it relates to MBE engagement.
