SBIR/STTR re-authorization in limbo in Congress |
This is something that BIANYS is following very carefully on behalf of our members. We have been hearing from a number of members who are concerned that their portfolio companies will lose access to the essential early-stage funding that these programs provide. The funding for SBIR and STTR is set to run out in September. It will be a top priority for BIANYS to ensure the funding remains in place and that our members are engaged in the discussion in Washington on how to improve the program.
Our legislative affairs committee will be meeting on July 27th at 10am to discuss this issue along with issues surrounding the new normal/the future of work and the need to discuss changes to the StartUP NY program requirements. First Ammonia-Powered, Zero-Emissions Tractor Revealed
Amogy Inc., a company at the Advanced Energy Center in Stony Brook’s Research & Development Park, recently demonstrated the first-ever ammonia-powered, zero-emissions tractor.
The vehicle maintains the functionality and duration requirements that operators rely on to support farming tasks, which has never been offered with other alternative energy solutions.

Farmer's Markets Provide Customer Validation,Value to Fledgling Businesses
Prior to getting involved with the Calverton Incubator, Director David Hamilton "never realized how important farmer’s markets were to the fledgling businesses you meet there. Now I really get it."
The markets are part of a critical and thriving economic ecosystem. They provide market research and communication with customers, and potentially a fanbase that can move products into established stores.

The Cornell Agriculture and Food Technology Park, or Tech Farm, as it is often called, is now a New York state-certified Business Incubator — and one of only 20 statewide.
Tech Farm said the designation will lead to “additional resources for current and future tenants and drive economic growth and job creation in the food and agriculture industries in Geneva and beyond.”
Tech Farm was able to achieve incubator status through support from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell Food Venture Center, Center of Excellence for Food and Agriculture, Center for Regional Economic Advancement, the city of Geneva and the Ontario County Office of Economic Development.

Ichor Life Sciences' LENTO BIO Launches Company
Lento Bio Inc., a preclinical pharmaceutical company, will initially focus on developing pharmaceutical eyedrops to treat a common vision disorder, presbyopia, or age-related farsightedness.
Lento Bio will be supported and incubated by Ichor Life Sciences, a preclinical contract research organization, at Clarkson University’s Peyton Hall Biotechnology Incubator. Lento Bio is the first startup company to join Ichor in establishing a North Country biotechnology cluster.

Griffiss Institute President & CEO Heather Hage recently announced the launch of the first-ever cohort of the HUSTLE Defense Accelerator. The program is an elite, immersive 12-week training academy for seed-stage startups developing AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, quantum science, and unmanned aircraft system solutions.
“The Griffiss Institute is incredibly excited to host these innovative startup leaders at the Innovare Advancement Center and provide them access to all of the amazing talent and technology resources we offer,” said Hage. “Creating the HUSTLE Defense Accelerator was a natural next step forward in our commitment to elevate the next generation of STEM students, professionals, and technologies. I’m confident one of these teams will emerge as the next big idea for national security.”

43North Placing Bigger Bets on Seed-Stage Startups
with FIVE $1M Investments

As Buffalo, New York gains recognition as one of the fastest-growing startup hubs in the U.S., and on the heels of a transformational year, 43North is on the hunt for its eighth cohort. With the first IPO in 2021 by 43North portfolio company and unicorn, ACV Auctions, and an active cohort in residence at its headquarters, 43North has now opened applications for 2022!
This year, the accelerator program will select five companies and is increasing their check sizes to make $1 million investments. Previous years saw varying investment amounts with only one $1M dollar opportunity. The organization says the decision to make the shift came in response to a changing funding environment. “Venture capital looks a lot different than it did when we launched in 2014,” said Colleen E. Heidinger, president of 43North. “We took time to evaluate our offering and feel that this move, coupled with the value of our programming, ensures that we’ll remain competitive and continue to attract the top startups to our region.”

There’s a new fund and program based at UAlbany meant to help early startups become more attractive to potential investors.
The program by Innovate 518 can provide non-dilutive pre-seed funding up to $50,000. To start, the pilot program has a total of $150,000 to invest.
Innovate 518 is a state-funded program that connects 24 member organizations focused on fostering entrepreneurial efforts.

According to CA Director Sunmoon Jang, "The Communitas Ventures Accelerator Pitch Night is an evening of celebration of our alumni, community partners, supporters, and our current cohort of entrepreneurs. An innovative group of BIPOC-led startups across sectors pitched for the $10K Communitas Ventures Award."
