June's Potluck Dinner Dance
|
The first Potluck Dinner Dance of the season was a huge success! The food, as always, was delicious and the Hawaiian-themed decor created a festive atmosphere that matched the mood of attendees. The band, The Collective, got people out of their seats and onto the dance floor.
"Mahalo nui loa" or thank you very much to Donna and Tim Mathis and Terri and Paul West for hosting June's Potluck Dinner.
And a very special thank you to Terri for taking so many wonderful photos of the event!

Monday Night Golf &Twilight Dinners
| |
|
Attendance for the twilight dinners has been at record highs! The first three twilight dinners welcomed between 78 and 87 guests. If you aren't already playing fun golf or attending the dinners or both, please come join in the fun!
The 9-hole “fun” team golf is for Mountain Glen members and homeowners, both men and women. With Jim Dye in charge, this activity is as much game as it is golf, so both beginners and experienced players will have fun. Signup by no later than Sunday evening. If you sign up, please show up. Be at the club at 4:00 PM for a prompt 4:15 PM shotgun tee off. Two dollars will be collected from each player by team captains. Team winners will be paid in cold, hard, cash.
The Twilight Dinner follows at 6:30 PM. You do not have to play golf to participate in the dinner, which is $15 per person, BYOB. Sign up for the dinner is required by Friday before the event.
Hosts for July dinners are John and Susan Quick.
Sign up sheets for both Twilight Golf Games and Twilight Dinners are posted on the notice board above the mailboxes near the clubhouse.

Monday Night Fun Golf
Jim Dye likes to mix things up.
Last week's Monday 9-hole fun golf teams had to use quirky putters from Jim's vast collection. Men were not allowed to use their drivers, 3 and 5 woods. Women teed off from the 150 yard marker, and all teams faced a strange and unusual challenge putting on the 6th hole.
Fun was had by all in this unique challenge!

This month I sat down with Johnny Campbell (pictured left, with his wife Ronna), an accomplished guitar player. Johnny plays lead guitar with the band, The Collective, which plays at numerous venues in the area, as well as with his church band at Newland Presbyterian Church.
Johnny started playing guitar when he was 10, the same time he started piano lessons with his mother, a concert pianist. In the end, guitar won out. Asked if his father was also musical, he said, "Well, he was the best whistler on the planet if that counts." (Since I can't whistle, that impressed me.)
Johnny considers his main inspirations blues rock guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. Although he likes all types of music, his favorite genre to play is classic rock and loves to play anything in that genre "as long as it's good."
Asked what his most embarrassing moment has been while performing, his initial response was "gosh, there are just so many" before telling me about the time he was about to start playing in front of a crowd at a church when his guitar strap broke, his guitar hit the ground in front of the stage and when he picked it up by the neck he realized the neck had broken off and his guitar was dangling by the strings. With nothing left to do, he stepped up to the mike and did his best Porky Pig impression saying, "Th-th-that's all, folks!"

A "No-Brainer" Message for Dog Owners
|
We all know that Mountain Glen is a very dog-friendly community and most of our dog owners are mindful and considerate. Following are a few gentle reminders.
Please keep your dog on a leash when walking.
Please be sure you pick up after your dogs! When you don’t pick up your dog’s poop, you leave open the possibility that people may step in it and other dogs might sniff it, which can spread infection. Don't count on the rain to "wash it away."
Also, if you are in the area of the golf course, please do not leave your dogs outside (e.g. on your deck) and unattended for extended periods if they are incessant barkers. This can be an unwelcome distraction for golfers.

Liar's Table in Elk Park is the latest endeavor of farmers Amos and Kaci Nidiffer, the owners of Trosley Farm. They established their 5-acre farm in Elk Park 14 years ago.
Amos and Kaci, named North Carolina Small Farmer's of the Year in 2020, may be familiar to you from their past presence at Avery Farmer's Market, Amos's chef engagements at Eseeola Lodge and Banner Elk Winery Bed & Breakfast or their farm-to-table dinners.
Liar's Table offers fresh produce, farm-raised meat, eggs and dairy, handmade chocolates, fresh-baked sourdough bread, and much more. They also offer grab-and-go sandwiches and wraps, baked goods, and other items along with fresh take-and-bake pizza (delicious). The shop also features natural care items, books and more. There is a small seating area where you can sit and enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed coffee, ice cream or other food.
The Liar's table also offers a CSA/Produce club, educational workshops (the two this month are on sourdough breadmaking and butchery), and farm-to-table dinners.
Hours for the Liar's Table are Thursday - Saturday 10 AM - 6 PM.

One of the many appeals of live music is that no two shows are alike. Even if you see the same artist or group perform multiple times, each experience will be unique.
With so many live music performances every week (Grandfather Winery alone has music four nights a week) it is impossible to list them all here. For further information on each venue, click on the title to go to their website for more details.

Catch the Butcher
July 15 - 23 at Historic Banner Elk School
A suspense thriller that blends romance, satire and dread to weave a macabre love story you won’t soon forget.
Director Gary Smith describes it this way: “If you were to combine the TV show ‘Dexter’ with the movie ‘Hostel,’ add a touch of ‘Forensic Files,’ a dash of ‘Stepford Wives’ and just a pinch of ‘Mad About You,’ then mix it all together, you’d have this quirky, unsettling and rewarding play.”
