Hunger Relief Monthly Update July 2022

Every month United Way of Palm Beach County (UWPBC)'s Hunger Relief Initiative provides you with the latest news about Hunger Relief in Palm Beach County. Information is current as of July 15, 2022. Check out what's new and learn about ongoing work below.

COMBAT SUMMER HUNGER

Summer can intensify hunger - kids are out of school, the agricultural season has ended, and donations usually decrease. This summer the impacts of inflation and the end of several federal food programs through COVID relief and other programs have intensified the need at hunger relief agencies. Below is a list of resources to help individuals and families access food this summer: Pandemic EBT (P-EBT): P-EBT is still available for the 2021-2022 school year! Students who did not have access to free or reduced-price meals because of COVID-related absences may be eligible to receive P-EBT. Students will receive $7.10 for each verified COVID-related absence. For a complete list of eligibility criteria and to submit an application for P-EBT please click here. The application closes on July 31, 2022 and recipients should expect staggered disbursements throughout September 2022. Summer BreakSpot (SBS): SBS is in full swing! SBS provides free meals for children 18 and under throughout the summer. Find an SBS site near you through the Summer BreakSpot website, by calling 2-1-1, or by texting "Food" or "Comida" to 304-304. UWPBC Food Finder Map: UWPBC's Food Finder Map is updated weekly and has been viewed over 168,000 times! The best way to access emergency food is through your local pantry. Anyone looking for food or helping others find food is encouraged to look up locations on the map. You can also find food locations by calling 2-1-1.

The best way to ensure people suffering from food insecurity have access to emergency food is through a strong pantry system. Pantries rely largely on food from local food banks and other donations. Donations typically decrease during the summer meaning food banks and pantries have to spend more money on purchasing food. You can learn how to support your local food bank and pantry system through food donations here.

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES Quantum in the Community: The Quantum Foundation is now accepting applications for their Quantum in the Community Initiative through July 29th. Quantum in the Community helps support organizations meeting basic needs of food, clothing, housing, financial assistance, and transportation. To apply, click here.

We couldn't do our work without you! The Hunger Relief Initiative uses a Collective Impact Model to implement the Palm Beach County Hunger Relief Plan and make sustainable, long-term change to the food and hunger relief system in Palm Beach County. We do this work through our Hunger Relief Advisory Council and the Council's work groups and subcommittees. Every month we have a variety of Advisory Council, work group, and subcommittee meetings. You made a huge difference for millions of children by encouraging Congress to pass the Keep Kids Fed Act. Passage of this act means waivers so children can continue to access summer meals, increased reimbursements for schools, and increased reimbursements for child care centers.
