Happy July! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the long weekend!
We had a busy, but great month in June, we had lots of fun getting back to our regular NPAW activities! The Society for Range Management - Prairie Parkland Chapter did a great job planning the tour in the Eastend area. It was so nice to be out talking about birds, learning about plants and visiting with folks we haven't seen in a while! There's a summary of all NPAW activities below!
We have one Native Prairie Speaker Series webinar planned in July, where Victoria Hartley-Cox will discuss great horned owls. You can register here!
We had one Native Prairie Speaker Series webinar in June, Troy McMullin discussed lichens! I heard lots of positive feedback from attendees in the days after his presentation, and you can find it here!
And finally, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support: Camp Wolf Willow, Canadian Forage and Grasslands Association, EcoFriendly West, Enbridge, Information Services Corporation, Mosaic Company, Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskEnergy, SaskPower, SaskTel, SaskWater, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP Partners.
Have a great month!

PCAP Recap: Native Prairie Appreciation Week, June 19-25, 2022
SK PCAP would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all partners, followers and native prairie enthusiasts for spreading the word about native prairie and the importance of its conservation.
Here are the highlights:
- In addition to an official proclamation from the SK Ministry of Agriculture and the SK Ministry of Environment, the urban municipalities of Weyburn, Moose Jaw, Regina and Saskatoon all proclaimed Native Prairie Appreciation Week.
-
Our Native Prairie Photo contest received over 60 entries in three categories: Native Prairie Landscape, Native Prairie Wildflower, and Wildlife in Action. Thank you to everyone who submitted photos and voted for their favourites! It's a great way to share the beauty and diversity of native prairie landscapes. You can see all entries on our Facebook page HERE.
- Over 220 posters were submitted to the Native Prairie Youth Poster Contest this year! The winners are below!
-
We also had 1 webinar during NPAW, that was well attended with over 124 individuals tuning-in for the webinars and an additional 56 views on YouTube! You can find the lichen presentation recording here!
- The NPAW Tour in Eastend, June 22-23. The event was well attended with 47 participants, there were presentations about buffalo rematriation, bird ID and habitat assessments, plant ID stations and quiz, and discussions about prescribed fire. The weather was perfect, the food was good and we got to spend time in native prairie in the beautiful Arena pasture with a fun, prairie-loving crowd.
We would like to thank our Presenting Sponsor for

Partner Spotlight:
Saskatchewan Bison Association
There’s still time to register and attend the International Bison Convention being held in Saskatoon July 12-15th. This conference will not come back to Canada for 10 years, so it is a rare opportunity to experience some of the important voices in the bison world.
Speakers include:
- Dr. Wanda Olech. A leader in efforts to conserve the European bison (Wisent). Dr Olech is a professor and former Dean of Animal Science at the University of Warsaw.
- Dr. Glenn Plumb. The former lead biologist for the National Parks Service in the USA, Dr Plumb has worked intensively at Yellowstone National Park since 1998. Dr Plumb has an excellent message of the value that comes from conservation groups and private land owners working together.
- Leroy Little Bear. A professor at the University of Lethbridge and one of the founders of the Buffalo Treaty signed in 2014. Mr. Bear will speak at IBC, plus will participate in a signing ceremony at Wanuskewin on July 15th to bring on new signatories to the Buffalo Treaty.
- Dr Sylvain Charlebois. Known as “the Food Professor” from the University of Dalhousie, Dr Charlebois is a renowned voice helping to shape food policies across Canada.
- Chris Roper. From the Quapaw tribe of Oklahoma, Mr. Roper has extensive experience developing business opportunities related to developing natural resources.
If you can’t spare the time for the full convention, it is also possible to attend a single day or evening banquet. You can register on the website www.bisonconvention2022.com If you are interested in purchasing a banquet table for your organization, please contact Merek Wigness.
