FOR HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS
AS AN
ELITE HUNTER*

Yakutia Snow Sheep, Russia
Himalayan Ibex, Pakistan
2023 CONKLIN AWARD
The formal announcement will be made by the Conklin Foundation, but Dr. Brad Black will be the 2023 recipient of the Conklin Award, which is based on a proprietary scoring system that awards points only to species requiring one or more of the following to successfully hunt: sweat, climbing, harsh conditions, danger, and/or overcoming fear.
Cheetah, Namibia
Brown Brocket Deer, Mexico
THE JOURNEY
At age 13, Brad took a single shot .410 into the Arkansas woods in search of squirrels. After 27 more years of hunting small game, he embarked on his first serious big game hunt for Whitetail in Saskatchewan. That hunt hooked him on the pursuit of North American big game for several years until hunts for Marco Polo and an African safari started his worldwide hunting in earnest.
OHAA Award presented by
Wilson Stout
Large-Spotted Genet, Ethiopia
SCI, DSC, GSCO
With the SCI Record Book as his guide, Brad has now hunted big game hard and often for 25 years, in 43 countries, on 179 hunts. Along the way, he has received many prestigious awards including:

  • 2022: International Hunting Award; awarded only once per year (for 43 years) by SCI.

  • 2018: Outstanding Hunting Achievement Award; awarded once per year by DSC.

  • 2014: Slamquest Pinnacle; awarded by GSCO for achieving the Grand Slam, Super Slams of Sheep and Goats, and the North American 29.

  • 2013: World Hunting and Conservation Award; the highest honor in SCI’s World Hunting Awards program.
Lesser Kudu, Ethiopia
Giant Forest Hog, Ethiopia
A FEW OF BRAD’S FAVORITES
  • Mountain hunts and climbing … he was a long distance runner when younger.

  • Multiple species hunts … especially in Africa.

  • Rain forests … they are challenging and have great diversity.

  • Learning about different animals and cultures.

  • Shooting his .300 Weatherby.
Himalayan Tahr, Nepal
Blue Sheep, Nepal
WHAT’S NEXT?
Still hunting with a passion (and the support of his wife of 40 years, Sharon), Brad is close to his next goals:

  • The Pantheon Award from GSCO requires 30 Sheep, 30 Goats, and SCI’s World Hunting and Conservation Award. Brad is only one animal short.

  • The Rex Baker 40: Brad is close and his qualification is inevitable.

  • The Weatherby Award: Brad has been a finalist for 3 years, but this award is not inevitable because the finalists selected each year are some of the world’s most prolific hunters. The Weatherby Foundation is expected to make their 2023 selection soon.

NEWS FLASH!! It was just announced,
on June 28, that Dr. Brad Black is the
2023 WINNER of the WEATHERBY !!
Congratulations.

NEXT MONTH, ANOTHER ELITE HUNTER* WILL BE PROFILED. WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR SELECTION COMMITTEE IS COMPOSED OF RENOWNED HUNTERS ED YATES, REX BAKER, and
RENEE SNIDER.
