Ergonomics is creating the best environment to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). These disorders affect the body and can be caused by repetitive tasks, like lifting, bending, and reaching.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ergonomic injuries account for 30% of days away from work due to injury in the United States, with construction having the fifth highest. These injuries can cost companies in the U.S. nearly $33 billion in workers compensation claims per year.
How can you identify these types of injuries? Below is a list of ergonomic injuries to consider and factor prevention into your work process.
Ergonomic Injuries
· heavy, frequent, or awkward lifting, repetitive tasks.
· improper grips and/or postures, hand-intensive work.
· using excessive force and/or overexertion.
· using wrong tools for the job or using tools improperly.
· using improperly maintained tools.
A Job Hazard Assessment of the workplace and job tasks can assist in providing an adequate work process, Personal Protective Equipment, and training. Employers should train employees on back injury prevention by having proper posture, using their legs to lift not lower backs. Breaking down the load or get help to lift heavy objects, use the help of mechanical means if necessary. Use the proper tools and maintain them according to the manufacturer's manual. Workers can choose to stretch and warm up before they start working.
A construction site is constantly changing. Always protect yourself and employees from ergonomic hazards which can impact health and quality of life. Proactive and preventive measures will promote safety and can help employees avoid injuries.
