President's Message

Theresa Leatherbury, CPM® President, IREM Maryland Chapter Happy Summer to my IREM Family. Hope everyone has been enjoying some well-deserved summer vacation time. Our Chapter is working together to advance our mission of promoting superior management practices. Our focus continues to be the Strategic Plan that was developed at the end of 2021. In April, Chapter Leadership attended the annual Chapter Leadership Conference in Chicago. This conference brought together leadership from Chapters around the country, and a few international chapters as well. We shared ideas and best practices. We are working to implement a few of those ideas.  One of our main takeaways is how to better engage members of our chapter. We discussed ideas for encouraging members to volunteer on chapter committees and ways to develop future leaders. It starts with outreach and communication. To further advance these efforts, our chapter developed a Member Engagement committee that will work closely with the Membership committee. More engaged members will lead to a growth in overall chapter membership.  Our Chapter achieved a huge milestone this year. Thanks to the efforts of Bev Willis and her committee, we launched REstart® in May of this year. The participants completed a 6-week in-class training followed by 6 weeks of internships. We are proud to report that 5 students graduated on July 25. Congratulations to the students and thanks to all the volunteers! We have some amazing events coming up. The Annual Golf Tournament, also known as the “Best Monday of the Year” is August 22. And this year marks 30 years! The Annual Meeting and Crab Feast is Wednesday September 21. Look for details on these 2 events. Our Chapter is blessed with so many talented members and a very dedicated and hard-working staff. Together, we advance our mission and enhance the lives of those who live and work in the properties we manage.  Theresa Leatherbury IREM MD, President

Always on the move and striving to make a difference for the chapter, congratulations to Sharón Turner, CPM®, for recently earning her DEI Skills Badge! During her journey Sharón learned about the critical components of diversity, how to ID strategies and best practices to achieve greater inclusion and equity, and how to incorporate DEI into policies and procedures. Congratulations on all your accomplishments, we are proud of your hard work and dedication to IREM MD and to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion!

Congratulations to Tikia Neblett, on earning her CPM® Certification! Tikia has been a member of IREM MD for a short time, but has already shown commitment and dedication to the IREM family. She is hard working and a role model and we can't wait to see you grow within the chapter! Tikia currently serves on the IREM MD REstart® Committee and the DEI Committee.

IREM Member Engagement Committee

One of our biggest takeaways from the Chapter Leadership conference were ideas on how to engage members and develop future leaders. To help advance this effort, IREM Maryland created a Member Engagement committee. This committee will work closely with the Membership Committee so that we can better engage current and new members. More engaged members will lead to growth in overall chapter membership. We will use the acronym WELCOME as a guide to intentional actions for new member engagement: Warm – create an environment where new members feel welcome. Explain – who & where resources are. Logistics – how to access my IREM®. Culture – fun, friendly & welcoming. Orient – help understand tools available (CPM® Handbook, checklists, events). Monitor – check in. Effort – invite new members to events and social media channels. All new members will be invited to attend a new member orientation. New members will hear information about IREM, our mission, current leadership, benefits of being a member, how to get involved and other information. Current and new members will be invited to participate in a mentorship program. This program will help CPM Candidates navigate the CPM path as well as encourage members to pursue their CPM or pursue opportunities for chapter and national leadership. Thank you to all the Member Engagement and Membership committee members. Together we are advancing our mission to connect real estate professionals and promote superior management practices.
