Here's what's happening in our programs!
| |
Things are starting to settle down over here at STRIVE U. Over this past weekend we had graduation for the STRIVE U Class of 2022! These 7 students worked extremely hard over the last couple of years. They spent hours working on goals, sitting in classes, and working at different jobs. We wish them the best of luck as they start on their new journey of independence! We also welcomed to campus the STRIVE U Class of 2024! They are starting to get adjusted to living on their own and campus life! | |

Let's Think About It!
STRIVE WorldWIDE is offering a brand new class in July: Critical Thinking! Critical Thinking is using reason to examine all the information before making an informed decision or opinion. Let's think about voting. Do you vote? How do you decide who you'll vote for? Critical thinking will remind us to do some research before we get into the voting booth. We don't want to know who or what you're voting for, or why, but we want to make sure that you do! We will examine media and information sources and look at how different people and websites present the same information in different ways. How do you know if you're getting the whole story? We'll also practice listening to and understanding people who we don't agree with. We'll look for common ground and ways to communicate and collaborate (that's a jargon giraffe word for work together).
Let’s Practice:
1. Perspective taking: If you LOVE chocolate ice cream, can you think of two reasons why someone else might like strawberry better? Email Sara at Sbrown@pslstrive.org with your favorite ice cream flavor and one reason why someone else might not like it!
2. Problem Solving (and misdirection): You are in a dark room with a single match. The only objects available to you are a candle, an oil lamp, and a gas stove. Which item do you light first? Email Anne at Aryan@pslstrive.org with your answer.
If you are interested in learning more about our classes or joining us for Critical Thinking, check out our course catalog here.

TOPS celebrated the graduation and completion of programming for 11 students at the beginning of the month. Each student gave a final speech, outlining their growth and plans for their future. Our students practiced for over a month to write and deliver their speech. It was undoubtably a successful evening!
Our 13 returning students wrapped up the school year by mid-month and have a few weeks off before our Extended School Year (ESY) program begins. While students are out of session, our staff are busy planning and organizing for ESY and the upcoming school year. Our team is excited to welcome all 26 students for the 6-week program this summer!

It’s been a very exciting month here at Bayside where we’ve welcomed two new participants Ayla and Nathan who are settling into our busy routine of shopping, banking, navigating, library, and our newest addition; danceability where we enjoy time moving to the music with peers from different programs. Bayside is warming up and as the summer sets in, participants are trying to spend as much time enjoying the outdoors as they can. Bayside is lucky to be so close to beautiful local parks like Eastern Prom and Deering Oakes where our groups play tennis, read a book under the shade, or even get our feet wet on hot days in the splash area. To add a little challenge to our navigation goals staff have developed a scavenger hunt where participants will either find local spots or items in person or take selfies with them. Tune in next month to see who finds the most items on the list. Also, next month we look forward to more bussing adventures and exploring new parts of downtown Portland with our new participants. Welcome Ayla and Nathan!
We are proud to welcome home Brandon and Charlie from their events at the Special Olympics they both trained very hard and were dedicated to their sports of swimming for Charlie and track and field for Brandon. Congrats boys you’ve worked hard!

STRIVE Bayside is a unique community supports program that is dedicated to exploring and increasing independence. We run five days a week, Monday through Friday and have two daily sessions, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. We operate out of an apartment in down town Portland to simulate actual apartment living. Summer has arrived here at STRIVE! We got to kick off the summer by going strawberry picking, with the strawberries that we picked, we made homemade popsicles. They were perfected on a hot summer day! Also here at program we are continuing all are usual activities. Some of these activities is cooking, volunteering, hiking, and going to the beaches. Some of our seasonal volunteer sites are Fort Williams, where we help keep the gardens looking nice for all our visitors that come to Maine. Portland Gear Hub is another place we volunteer at where we help them take apart bikes that people donate. Another place we started volunteering at is Maine Audubon. We help them keep the discovery room clean and organized for their camp visitors that they have throughout the summer. We also help them with many other projects!
For our virtual group, we are continuing to learn how to take photos using are phones. We are learning to take pictures with different angles. We are learning how things are made in our how it’s made group. We are learning how to write story’s in our writing group. To end the week we get to take field trips to different parts of the world and learn about all the different cultures!
