PRESIDENT'S NOTES
"Building Forward Together" Marrakech, Morocco

You will read this as I am returning from Morocco where I represented Delaware's international business community at the US-Africa Business Summit organized by the Corporate Council on Africa.

The Summit, held in Marrakech, Morocco this year, was an opportunity to showcase the many advantages we offer the rest of the world. African Heads of State, corporate leaders and experts from the major international funding institutions and agencies such as the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the US government's US Agency for International Development, US Trade and Development Agency and Prosper and Power Africa initiatives spoke to the delegates from government, industry and civil society.

Anchored by the expanding Port of Wilmington, logistics remains a growing industry in Delaware. In fact, the Ambassador from Morocco to the United States, H.H. Princess Lalla Joumala Alaoui, in a letter to the WTC Delaware, called the Port of Wilmington a "Port of Choice". We think so, too and thank the Port and the Delaware Prosperity Partnership for participating in our Summit trade show exhibit booth. Our booth was strategically located in the convention hall and proved to be a popular stop for delegates and officials. We value our association with the Corporate Council on Africa and the support that they give to us as we make Delaware the first state that countries on the African continent think about when they consider doing business with the USA.
Expanding Ties with Tangiers, Morocco

The President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of Tangiers-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Mr. Abdelatif Afailal, members of the Board, and the Regional Center of Investment hosted me in their beautiful city which has had diplomatic and commercial relations with the United States since 1777, before we became a fully independent nation. Fittingly, my trip started with a trip to the American Legation (pictured here), a gift from the Sultan in 1821, located in the old Medina and in continuous use and ownership by the US Government. Both the Chamber and Investment Center presented a thorough overview of the region's economy and the opportunities for collaboration. Video and slide presentations prepared by the Delaware Prosperity Partnership and the GT USA Wilmington augmented World Trade Center Delaware's synopsis of Delaware's trade and investment climate. The Chamber has requested to visit Delaware this fall and to open discussions with the healthcare, medical equipment, pharmaceutical, environmental services, and agricultural sectors in Delaware. Of particular interest is the state's outstanding nursing and allied health professional training.

About 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) to the east of Tangier is the kingdom's crown jewel, the Tanger MedPort, the port of Tangiers. You can click here to see a video of the port. The port is Africa's largest seaport and is strategically located on the Strait of Gibraltar, just 14 kilometers from Europe. It extends for more than 10 kilometers along the Moroccan coast and includes two sections enclosed in separate breakwaters. Harbourmaster Mounir Razfa and Manager Anas Halhal guided me through this complex operation. I look forward to seeing them in Wilmington later this year.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT
The Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) is the official export credit agency of the United States. EXIM is an independent Executive Branch agency with a mission of supporting American jobs by facilitating the export of U.S. goods and services.

When private sector lenders are unable or unwilling to provide financing, EXIM fills in the gap for American businesses by equipping them with the financing tools necessary to compete for global sales. In doing so, the agency levels the playing field for U.S. goods and services going up against foreign competition in overseas markets, so that American companies can create more good-paying American jobs.

Because it is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, EXIM assumes credit and country risks that the private sector is unable or unwilling to accept. The agency's charter requires that all transactions it authorizes demonstrate a reasonable assurance of repayment; EXIM consistently maintains a low default rate and closely monitors credit and other risks in its portfolio.
