Romania, 1989. Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but he can't, not in a communist country ruled by the tyrannical dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu. When Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer, he must decide whether to betray everyone he loves or use his position to undermine his country's regime. As part of the revolution, he aims to give a voice to his fellow Romanians. But what, exactly, is the cost of freedom, and is Cristian willing to pay it?

Jess, desperate for a fresh start, asks her half-brother Ben if she can crash with him for a bit in Paris. While he doesn't sound thrilled, he doesn't say no. Only when she shows up, Ben is nowhere in sight. The longer he stays missing, he more Jess starts to dig into his situation--like how he could afford a place like this, anyway--but the more she searches, the more questions she has. She was running from her past... but what if it's Ben's future that's at risk?

In August of 1897, commandant Adiren de Gerlache set sail aboard the Belgica. His hope was to sail the uncharted and reach the South Pole for the glory of his native Belgium. But his trip was wrought with bad luck, even before the Belgica became stuck in the icy waters of Antarctica. Now, the crew would have to ready winter stranded on the world's coldest continent, months in the land of endless night, plagued with illness and losing any hope of survival.
