Demystifying Dielectric Frequency Response Test for Proper Moisture Assessment in Oil-Filled Transformers.

By Drew Welton, IEEE Sr., VP of Sales, intellirent, Division of Electro Rent Corp .

Q. Do you rely solely on your transformer’s oil analysis for moisture determination?

Q. Would you be willing to explore more efficient options according to IEEE standards?

DFR testing has been around since the mid-nineties and is a verified method of determining moisture content in the solid insulation of oil filled transformers.

I recall participating in an IEEE event a year or so ago and listening to the opinion of a field service technician who has been testing power transformers for a number of decades. I inquired about how he would perform a moisture analysis for his customer’s oil-filled transformers, and his response was, “In my oil screen analysis that I get from the lab.” I then asked about performing dielectric frequency response (DFR), and he said, “No, I don’t believe in it; I would never perform it unless the customer insisted”. As it turns out, quite a few NETA field technicians don’t have much experience with it or have been flatly told it’s not a proven technology.

A-Rent Test Equipment

New In-Field Calibration Services for High Current Test Sets.

Are your large primary injection (high current) circuit breaker test sets due for calibration?

A-Rent now offers NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) traceable in-field remote calibration for sets like the PI-4000 or PI-6000 from ETI and DDA-6000 or CB-8160 from Megger.

Remote calibration is a cost-effective option that eliminates the hassle and expense of shipping the heavy unit to the lab while minimizing time out of the field. To complete an in-field remote calibration, we’ll ship you a kit with our calibration standards and schedule a remote session with one of our engineers. While your technician energizes and controls the set, our engineer will walk them through the calibration steps and record data via a video call.

A-Rent is always looking for innovative new services to save customers time and money. We’re here for all of your calibration and rental needs from our Chicago and Houston locations. We have the test equipment, technical expertise, and logistics solutions to support all nationwide projects.

Doble Engineering

“Is it safe?” Asset Management and Monitoring Technology at Doble Engineering.

By Tony McGrail, Solutions Director: Asset Management and Monitoring Technology at Doble Engineering

There is always pressure to re-energize a power transformer after a fault trips it out – but to do so comes with risks that need to be understood and addressed.

When primary station equipment trips out, it is often the substation maintenance engineers who must review the situation, get the data needed to make an informed decision, and then ‘make the call’. There is often ‘pressure’ to re-energize a large power transformer after a fault, especially when the cause of the fault is ‘clearly’ evident. In the story here, taken from a technical paper presented at the Doble Client Conference in 2012 by Mike Wolf of National Grid USA (now at First Energy), two faults occurred in quick succession, tripping a large power transformer on a site where construction work was being undertaken to expand the station with the transformer adjacent to the site access road.
