METRANS Research Spotlight: Transforming Transportation Systems and Policy

Access to the chassis used by motor carriers, railroads, and marine terminal operators to transport intermodal containers is a key determinant in supply chain efficiency. To address that supply chain priority, Dr. Tom O’Brien, Executive Director of the Center for International Trade & Transportation, is serving on a committee, sponsored by the Federal Maritime Commission, to examine chassis dislocation and lack of chassis availability to determine effective industry and policy solutions for the future of the U.S. supply chain.

Win NSF Grant to Address Digital Rights

Two METRANS researchers recently partnered with the City of Long Beach to win a National Science Foundation (NSF) planning grant to research, develop, and pilot a community-informed digital rights platform that can serve as a national model for acknowledging data privacy as a human right.

METRANS researchers highlighted the dynamic industry and community partnerships university transportation centers (UTCs) bring to their regional communities at the Fourth Annual National Mobility Summit of USDOT Centers sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University. The March Summit, held in Washington DC had as its theme “UTC Innovations and Impacts: Advancing Mobility for All.”

The METRANS Transportation Consortium was established in 1998 as the first University Transportation Center in Southern California. METRANS is a joint partnership of the University of Southern California (USC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).


METRANS' mission is to solve transportation problems of large metropolitan regions through interdisciplinary research, education and outreach. Its three primary objectives are: (1) fostering independent, high quality research to solve the nation's transportation problems; (2) training the next generation transportation workforce; and (3) disseminating information, best practices, and technology to the professional community.
