July 2023 Sightline

President Sightline Message

As we enter the month of July, we shift our focus to two important aspects of eye health: dry eye awareness and UV safety. July is recognized as National Dry Eye Awareness Month, a time to highlight the significance of eye health in our overall well-being.

Dry eye, a condition more commonly observed in individuals aged 50 and above, affects many Americans. According to the National Eye Institute, alarmingly, nearly 5 million Americans aged 50 or older endure severe symptoms of dry eye, while approximately 20 million experience milder symptoms. Women are especially prone to this condition, with a prevalence twice that of men.

While dry eye can be managed and treated with proper care, it is crucial that individuals experiencing symptoms seek the guidance of an eye doctor. Identifying and addressing any underlying medical conditions is essential, as, in rare cases, untreated, dry eye can result in permanent visual impairment or even blindness.

Additionally, July marks UV Safety Month, a time to raise awareness about the potential risks associated with long-term exposure to bright sunlight. Research indicates that prolonged exposure to UV rays may increase the likelihood of cataracts and eye growths, including cancer. The reflection of UV rays from sand and water can even lead to sunburned eyes, potentially causing temporary blindness within a matter of hours.

In support of UV Safety Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology emphasizes the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Wearing 100% UV-blocking sunglasses and broad-brimmed hats can shield our eyes effectively, reducing the risks UV radiation poses.

Let us make a collective effort to practice and prioritize positive eye health protection throughout July and beyond. By spreading awareness, seeking proper care, and embracing UV blocking lenses, we can take significant steps toward preserving our vision and safeguarding our overall well-being.

We wish all a month filled with healthy eyes and radiant smiles.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edward "Larry" Jones

President Farewell Message

As my tenure as President of the National Optometric Association draws to a close, I want to reflect on our accomplishments and express my gratitude for the support and dedication of our members. Together, we have made significant strides in advancing the visual health of minority populations.

Our core focuses are recruiting and mentoring aspiring optometrists and providing scholarships to help them pursue their dreams. By nurturing talent and investing in the education of young individuals, we have been able to make a lasting impact on the optometric community.

However, I must address a recent setback that profoundly concerns us all. The rejection of the affirmative action vote in schools will undoubtedly pose challenges for us in recruiting and assisting young people in gaining admission to undergraduate and optometry programs. Despite this setback, let us remain resolute in our commitment to providing opportunities for underrepresented individuals in the field of optometry.

Our strong alliances have encouraged and inspired me throughout my presidency, particularly with the American Optometric Association, the Academy, and our loyal sponsors. These relationships have been crucial in furthering our mission and expanding our reach. I am immensely proud of the National Optometric Association and our progress together.

As I pass the baton of leadership, I am excited about the future of our organization. The infusion of new talent and perspectives will undoubtedly invigorate our work. As we gather in Fort Lauderdale for our 2023 convention, I urge us to continue prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our training programs and recruitment efforts. We can truly thrive as a community by embracing the richness of our differences.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for your unwavering support, dedication, and commitment to the National Optometric Association. Our staff and board members have effectively executed their jobs and complimented me. Together, we have transformed lives and created lasting change. I have confidence that our organization will continue to flourish under new leadership.

Thank you, and may God bless you all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edward "Larry" Jones
