XVIII General Chapter

The 18th General Chapter of the Xaverian Missionaries began on Saturday, July 1, 2023. Father Philipe Kitenge, the Provincial of the Barnabiti Fathers. conducted a meditation on the phrase from 1st Corinthians 9, 19-23, “To be everything for all." We were invited to reflect on the importance of the step from prophecy to the duty of the announcement. We were reminded that the religious danger today is to remain in perpetual preparation for the coming of the Lord when we will pass from simply being followers of Christ to actually Christ himself. We are therefore called to understand and to act differently in order to create a new world not with artificial intelligence but with the intelligence of love. The Eucharist was celebrated by the Superior General accompanied by the outgoing Council.

Out of all the messages which have come in from various confreres and friends we would like to mention the words of the Apostolic Nuncio of Congo, Mons. Balestrero who praised the Congregation in its choice of Bukavu for the General Chapter, “You have a history of holiness here in Congo even as far as the witness of martyrdom and perseverance in the midst of hostile and difficult situations."

The Chapter met in the afternoon and Fr. Fernando Garcia began with the ‘preliminary acts’ as written in the directory of the General Chapter (N. 35) and with the consent of the Chapter delegates declared open the XVIII Xaverian General Chapter. The members of the coordinating committee were elected as three 3 chapter delegates known as the group of the “3 wise men” whose job it will be to help with the daily running of the Chapter by coming up with what may be the recurring themes and questions which will make up the order of the day for the General Chapter.

Preaching on a New Field in Mission: Listening and Responding to Those Who Leave the Church

Fr. Carl Chudy, preaching at Mary Queen of Peace in Salem, New Hampshire, speaks of the new and expanding area of a Catholic mission in the USA that seeks voices outside of the church. In this case, he focuses on understanding those who leave the church to be able to respond with an evangelical heart. Many thanks to Monsignor Mark Montminy and the good folks at Mary Queen of Peace Church and Sts. Mary and Joseph Parish.

Interfaith Dialogue

Metrowest Dialogue Project

Watch as our interfaith panel discusses the #spiritual and #religious themes of the new film, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," and how they pertain to the inner lives of the young people they care for. Springtide’s Head Writer and Editor, Dr. Angela Patterson, asks our panelists of rabbis and reverends thought-provoking #questions, from “Do you feel it is important that young people are exposed to stories like this?" to “What has been your experience dealing with those adults that have religious trauma, and how have you seen it affect how they parent?”

Summer Blessings!

May you walk with God

This summer

In whatever you do

Wherever you go

Walking with God means...

Walking with honesty

And with courage,

Walking with love

And respect

And concern for the feelings of others

May you talk to God

This summer

And every day and

In every situation

Talking with God means...

Praying words of praise

For the beauty of creation

Saying prayers of thanks

For friends and good times,

Asking God's help

In all your decisions

Expressing sorrow

When you have failed

May you talk with God

Every day. Amen.
