Proper watering is essential for a thriving garden!

July is the perfect time to ensure you are giving your plants the water they need and deserve! As temperatures rise, it is crucial to monitor sensitive veggies to ensure they receive enough water.

Tips for watering:

  • Early morning is the best time to water; watering in the evening can cause the water to pool overnight potentially leading to fungal diseases.
  • Dry soil can inhibit germination of seeds; it is important to plant when the soil is moist.
  • Daytime temperatures above 30º can discourage plants from flowering.

Let's talk melons and beans!

The warmer weather in July is perfect for growing different types of beans and melons. Pole beans, Seychelles, & Scarlet Runner beans have pretty red flowers that will give you great beans. You might even find some hummingbirds will come to enjoy the nectar! Wax beans in green, yellow or purple are fast growers and can be picked in 50 days. Various types of melon are able to be harvested in around 70 days.

Beans are divided into two main groups: pole and bush. Pole beans thrive in cooler conditions and need support like a trellis to grow. Bush beans grow well in hotter conditions and do not require any support. However, all beans are easy to grow and can produce large yields.

Melon seeds shouldn't be planted until four weeks after the last frost date, or can be started inside and transplanted after four to six weeks. Harvest typically takes around 70 days depending on the type of melon being grown.

Remember to have fun, enjoy the process and keep those knees on the ground!
