Sunday Services for July.

Service at 10:30 am

Guest Speaker - Rev. Bob Murphy

"Hurricane Sunday"

The season for hot weather and hurricanes has started. Climate change is changing everything. Rev. Bob Murphy is a Unitarian Universalist minister in Florida. He'll discuss ancient rituals and modern activities for the summer months. Rev. Bob will have information about the General Assembly and climate justice.

The article below helps to introduce Rev. Bob Murphy to the congregation. (Rev. Murphy will be filling in once a month with our services).   "It explains my ministry. My environmental justice ministry with the Unitarian Universalists started during the early 1990s with Marjorie Bowens Wheatley. She was a UU minister in Tampa for a few years.  Marjorie is still a source of inspiration."

Title:  "Father Murphy and the Goats and the Sheep"

Author:  Rev. Robert (Bob) Murphy

I’m not Father Murphy.  Let me explain.

Back in the 1990s, I taught at a Jesuit school in Boston.  I mentioned my experience to a group of Unitarian Universalists.  Some folks assumed that I was a former Jesuit.  For better or for worse, I never had that experience.   I was raised in a family that was part Protestant and part Roman Catholic.   I loved and respected both sides, but there was too much conflict about religious statements.    As an adult, I chose the Unitarian Universalists.

I'm not a pastor.  Let me explain.

Yes, I’m a Unitarian Universalist minister.   I help people of faith in several communities.   Including Unitarian Universalists in Key West, Charlotte County, and in the Tampa Bay Area.  However, I seldom use the word "pastor" to describe my ministry.

Pastors are for sheep.   They can be found in some religious groups, although sheep are seldom seen at Unitarian Universalist gatherings.   Unitarian Universalists have some cats, and trying to herd cats is beyond mortal ability.   We have some goats in our congregations.  The goats can be quirky  and curious and sometimes rambunctious.

I was with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa last March to discuss voting rights and the defense of democracy.  No sheep were involved.  Sheep won't defend democracy.   They’ll wait for instructions from the shepherd.  In the near future, I’ll be with congregation members  to discuss the ways in which the climate change discussion is changing for Florida and the Caribbean.     You  can wear a wool coat when you come to the conversations, although you'll  probably be more comfortable if the dress for the season.   Last summer was hot and the summer of 2024 may be hotter.

I'm a fundamentalist. Let me explain.

Our Unitarian Universalist Association has a set of Bylaws.   Article Two explains the purpose of our Association.  The national Association is supposed to serve the member societies.   Religious, educational, and humanitarian activities are mentioned in the Bylaws.  Our goal is to overcome systems of power, privilege, and oppression that have created barriers for persons with particular identities, ages, abilities, and histories.   These are among the fundamentals for our Association.

As a fundamentalist among the Unitarian Universalists, I’ll stay with the basics as explained in our current Bylaws.   Feed the goats.  Feed the sheep.  Help the goldfish and the cats.  Same message for people on the left and people on the right.   If we insist on too much control, too much  conformity, and too much political correctness, the goats will tear the prayer tent apart and the pastors and other creatures will go bananas.  Give a catechism to a bunch of goats and they’ll eat the document for lunch.  What they need is something that's nourishing and desirable.   Keep it appetizing and good.  We can help each other and our neighbors.

 - END -

Board News

“In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.” — Abraham Maslow

Change comes to all of us and to all things. Sometimes it is welcome and joyfully received, like a job promotion or a new baby. Other times we struggle against change. It can arrive unexpectedly and disrupt our lives. We may try to avoid change and the necessary work that often accompanies it. Yet, we all know that change is a part of life and sooner or later, knocks on our door, often bringing with it both challenges and positive growth. We at UUCT are now facing change and challenge as we experience the unexpected departure of our minister. How can we make the most of this time as we heal and move forward? How can we face the challenges ahead together?

These will be the questions that your Board of Trustees and our members will be answering as we process this loss, and find our way forward. Each of us will experience this change differently and we wish to make space for those different experiences. At times of stress and change, it is vital that we treat ourselves and others with extra care and compassion. Now is the time to allow space for listening respectfully and acting thoughtfully.

We are working, as a Board, and with other committees to create a process that will help our congregation express their thoughts and feelings. We are also taking baby steps to make plans for our future, including congregational meetings in which members can voice their thoughts on ministerial guidance and programmatic direction. We hope to have more details to share soon.

On the positive side, we are seeing the resiliency and determination to thrive that is the heart of our congregation. Our members and committee leadership have stepped forward to continue the services and programs that we cherish. In particular, this month, the Board of Trustees wishes to thank Diana Stevens for taking over the coordination of Friday Game Night and Potluck supper. The Board also wishes to recognize Pat Benedict for her invaluable work in creating meaningful services for our congregation. We are inviting all interested members to attend a brainstorming session on July 28th after services to share ideas and plans for fundraising.

In what can feel like a sea of change and very uncertain times, we can count our own inner wisdom and kindness and that of other church members. May we step forward into growth together.

Upset by something you saw or heard in church? Unsure how to disagree without being disagreeable? Did you know that there is a Healthy Relations Team ready to help?

The Healthy Relations Team provides education about conflict resolution and helps congregants solve conflicts themselves. Members of the team have been trained in a conflict resolution process called Restorative Circles, which teaches the use of listening skills to reach new solutions to problems. Current members of the HRT include Ed Benedict, Kim McDonald, Kim Robe, Doris Ryan (chairperson), Mary Wolgemuth, and Karen Zindell.

If you would like to learn more about Restorative Circles or think you might need assistance from the HRT, please contact the team at healthyrelations@uutampa.org.
