Playing Sports on Mississauga Streets

The City is reviewing its by-laws and seeking resident feedback on playing sports and using sports equipment on local roads in Mississauga.

Currently, playing sports and using sports equipment on local roads is enforced on a complaint basis and issues are resolved through education.

Until Tuesday, August 6, Mississauga residents are invited to share their thoughts on playing sports on local roads using the online survey. The survey will help the City understand what sports are currently played on streets, how often sports are played on streets, and if residents have any feedback or concerns. Responses will inform recommendations for potential changes to the by-laws, including:

·        What sports, if any, should be permitted on Mississauga streets.

·        If allowed, when and where street sports should be permitted in Mississauga.

·        Where sports equipment should be stored when not in use.

·        How the updated by-laws will be enforced.

For more information and to complete the survey, visit mississauga.ca/street-sports.

Notification of Herbicide Application Jim Graham Park

Please be advised that contractors working on behalf of the City will be applying herbicide to control Wild Parsnip beginning July 12th 2024 at Jim Graham Park.

Contractors working on behalf of the City, Brinkman & Associates Reforestation Ltd., will apply VisionMax (Glyphosate) directly to the plants using a handheld/backpack sprayer to minimize impacts to plants in the surrounding area. Notification signs will be posted at all access points to the spray area at least 24 hours prior to treatment and will be removed no less than 48 hours after treatment. Treatment should be completed within a few days, but the timelines may be extended as needed depending on weather conditions.

This work supports the City’s Invasive Species Management Program and improves the health of natural areas across the City.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Update

As you may know, Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras are actively enforcing the speed limit in Mississauga. ASE uses a camera and a speed measurement device to help enforce speed limits in school area community safety zones. You may have seen some of these cameras in our community.

ASE and traffic calming measures have greatly helped to decrease vehicle operating speeds and increase speed limit compliance on Ward 11 roadways, creating a safer community and improving safety on our local roadways for all road users.

Current Ward 11 ASE Locations:

·        Church Street - Main Street to Queen Street South     Began January 26, 2024

·        Historic Trail – Pepperidge Crossing to Lamplight Way           Began April 26, 2024

Future Ward 11 ASE Locations:

·        Gaslamp Walk - Old Derry Road to John Watt Boulevard      July 2024

·        Vista Boulevard - Erin Mills Boulevard to Vista Drive   Summer 2024

Mayor-to-Mayor Meeting with Kariya Delegation

On Wednesday, July 3rd, I was very pleased to attend, with Mayor Parrish, fellow Councillors and City Staff, a Mayor-to-Mayor meeting at City Hall with a delegation from our Sister City, Kariya, Japan. We had the pleasure of meeting with Mr. Takeshi Inagaki, Mayor of Kariya City, Mr. Masato Suzuki, Chair of Kariya City Council and members of the Mississauga Friendship Association. We spoke about Mississauga’s 50th anniversary and celebrated Japan’s contributions to Mississauga’s overall economic success.

Mississauga has proudly called Kariya, Japan its sister city since 1981. The sister city initiative began in the 1950s as a way to promote communication between cities around the world. Having a sister city provides unique cultural and educational exchange opportunities for students, businesses and City staff. This partnership also enhances our City’s global reputation and trade. Over 100 Japanese companies now contribute to our local economy in Mississauga, more than any other city in Canada.

In July 1992, the City opened Kariya Park to honour our sister city partnership. The park features Japanese-style gardens, pavilion, cherry trees, rhododendrons, and several sculptures gifted to us by Kariya City. In 2001, Kariya City opened Mississauga Park. The park features a miniature replica of Mississauga’s City Hall, a maple leaf structure, and a sculpture of a bear by Canadian artist John McEwen.

PRP Update: Road Safety Initiatives

Road safety is a top priority for Peel Regional Police (PRP) and over the course of the summer, PRP will continue efforts to curb illegal street racing and high-speed driving. These efforts aim to change poor and aggressive driver behaviour and those who compromise road safety will be subject to charges and penalties.

Since the start of 2024, 15 people have lost their lives in Peel Region due to road-related incidents - all of these deaths were preventable and we are taking increased action. In the first half of this year, Peel Regional Police has issued over 20,000 Highway Traffic Act charges, including:

·        3800+ for speeding

·        400+ for careless driving

·        1200+ for mufflers causing unnecessary noise

·        1300+ for stunt driving and racing

The community is also encouraged to report concerning aggressive driving or street racing activities by contacting PRP at 905-453-3311 or through the Online Reporting Portal. For more information, visit: peelpolice.ca/roadsafety.

Celebrate Mississauga’s 50th Anniversary with Your Photography

In celebration of the City’s 50th anniversary, the Mississauga Library is excited to invite youth ages 12-24 in our community to showcase their talent and love for the city through photography. Participants are encouraged to submit photos of their favourite places in Mississauga, capturing the essence and beauty of our city through their eyes. We encourage participants to capture the places they love and find meaningful in their city. This can include parks, landmarks, community spaces, neighbourhoods, or hidden gems.

Applications for photo submissions are open from June 1, 2024, until August 31, 2024. All submitted images will be archived in the Historic Images Gallery, preserving the youth’s vision of Mississauga for future generations. The Teen Advisory Group will short-list ten submissions based on specific judging criteria. These finalists will be featured online for public voting and displayed digitally and in print at the Bradley Museum’s “Out of the Vault” 50th Anniversary Exhibition.
