Dear Faith Formation, Pastoral Assistants and Catechists,
During the week of June 17 to the 21st of this month, Tracey Joy, PAFF in St. Joseph's, Vancouver and I had the opportunity to attend the Institute on the Catechism Convocation at the St. Mary's of the Lake University in Mundalein, IL.
Bishops, priests, religious women, deacons, super intendents of Catholic Schools, diocesan directors and catechists learned and talked about the future of the Evangelizing Catechesis based on the vision of the Institute: "At the heart of the Church’s mission to all people, an evangelizing catechesis seeks to deepen a personal encounter with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit: It proclaims the core message of the Gospel, the kerygma; it accompanies people to a response of faith and conversion to Christ; it provides a systematic exposition of God’s revelation within the communion of the Catholic Church; and it sends out missionary disciples as witnesses to the good news of salvation."
The focus of this convocation was centered around two themes:
- The Directory for Catechesis and an evangelizing catechesis offered the opportunity to develop a clearer understanding of how catechetical resources that promote an ‘evangelizing catechesis’ can be at the service of new parish, family, and school initiatives.
- The new Handbook for the Catechetical Accompaniment Process and plans for its implementation was unveiled and discussed. This major initiative of the Institute is expected to have a very positive impact upon the integration of an evangelizing catechesis into our parishes and schools.
It was an honor to attend this Convocation and interchange ideas with a variety of participants. As we receive more information from the Institute this will be shared in our next newsletters or in our Facebook page: Archdiocese of Seattle Faith Formation.
We wish you a safe and rested summer and thank you for all of your great work in your ministry.

Annual Faith Formation Conference 2024
On June 8, 2024, we had our annual conference sponsored by the Augustine Institute. We had the participation not only Pastoral Assistants of Faith Formation and Youth Ministers, but also catechists, which reinforced the participation and gave us the opportunity to share with them the same formation.
Our Auxiliary Bishop, Frank Schuster celebrated the opening Mass and emphasized the importance of evangelization and catechesis in our parishes.
Dr. Ben Akers, was our keynote speaker and he provided us with three presentations in which he reviewed the essential characteristics of the Christian life: walking guided by the Word, praying as a disciple, and forming ourselves to be missionary disciples. In these presentations we gained tools to be better disciples of Christ and follow his footsteps.
Many thanks to all who participated and especially to our Lifelong Formation department staff and the Augustine Institute for their sponsorship.
