Summer greetings from the Center for Irish Music!

We kicked the summer off with the 16th Minnesota Irish Music Weekend, one of our best festivals yet! Thanks to everyone who attended a concert, event, or workshop. If you missed it, (or need a reminder of how fun it was) check out our blog post, our Facebook photo album, or watch the Saturday Master Concert on our YouTube page.

Our summer youth programs have begun, and we are especially looking forward to our three summer camps, taking place in the Scanlan Music Hall in our newly-renovated area. Grab a spot in one of two half-day morning camps the week of July 22nd (Irish Music & Arts with Adrienne O’Shea), or July 29th (Introduction to Irish Harp with Hannah Flowers).

It’s not too late to sign up for summer adult classes. As always, check out all the events, classes & camps on our calendar page here (classes that have already started are on our registration page). We canceled Dáithí’s Songs of Derry class, but plan to offer it again soon.

We’re looking forward to the Irish Fair of Minnesota on Harriet Island on August 9-11. CIM will be there with our usual booth in the marketplace (sign up to volunteer here), Irish Instrument Petting Zoos on Saturday and Sunday (where kids can try an Irish instrument), and performances by our talented students and instructors all across the fair.

Finally, save the date for the Center for Irish Music Open House on August 25th with class demos, a session, and performances. I look forward to seeing you soon!

CIM STORY-SHARING SESSION

"MANY PATHS TO HANDING DOWN A TRADITION"

JULY 17th, 5:00-6:30PM

The Center for Irish Music is excited to announce that we have contracted with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) consultant Sook Jin Ong to help us better understand, honor, and respond to the experiences and needs of our community.

To lay the groundwork for further explanation around these issues, and to help us all to better understand the interconnected nature of music and our various identities in life, we are embarking on a community story-sharing project in 2024.

We welcome and encourage our community members to join in conversation with each other by sharing stories of how Irish music weaves its way into the fabric of our lives. Marking CIM's 20th anniversary, this project makes time for conversation, connection, and reflection. By recognizing and uplifting our stories, identities, and backgrounds, together we can help our community grow and evolve.

Join us for the next story-sharing session on July 17th from 5:00-6:30pm in the CIM's Scanlan Music Hall. Refreshments will be provided! Learn more and register here.

CLAIRE VANORNY'S STORY

An important part of CIM's mission is to connect the younger generation with the Irish music tradition. Many young musicians have spent many hours in the classrooms of CIM in private and group lessons, building friendships with each other, and a deep appreciation for the culture of this artform.

CORY FROEHLICH'S STORY

A recurring theme in many of our stories is the power of connections, community, and kindness to keep us going in our own music journeys. Cory Froehlich's story is a powerful one to remind us of the people we get to meet and build deep relationships around the way.

SLÁN GO FÓILL, TOM KLEIN & DANIELLE ENBLOM

It’s rare that we have to say goodbye to our teaching artists, however we have two longtime instructors stepping away from teaching at the CIM, starting this summer.

Tom Klein, CIM’s original uilleann pipes instructor (who took a break when Pat McCormick took the helm from roughly 2010-2013), is a skilled and caring instructor.

Tom, thank you for your dedication to the community through your work as an instructor (and pipes repairman) at CIM. We wish you all the best with your growing performance career as you near retirement from your "other” job at the DNR.

Danielle Enblom has taught fiddle at CIM for several years. She’s taking a break from teaching to pursue performance projects (dance and music), and travel.

Danielle has had a special connection with every of her students, and is skilled adapting her teaching to serve a wide variety of learning styles. She has incorporated her unique perspective as a dancer, ethnochoreologist, and fiddler into her teaching at CIM.

Thanks for your years of teaching, Danielle!

Ryan Bhenke is teaching Tom's students (uilleann pipes) and Danielle's students are being taught by many of our fabulous fiddle teachers. See our instructors page for more in.

CONGRATULATIONS 2024 FITZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS!

Tim 'Fitz' Fitzgerald was an integral part of the Twin Cities Irish community. For 15 years, Fitz encouraged and advanced opportunities for performing musicians in the Irish community. We would like to carry on that tradition by using the funds from the Fitz Memorial Scholarship scholarship to support and recognize musicians at the Center for Irish Music...
