Miss Mac's Legacy of Love Lives On

Every Monday we have a program to serve those experiencing homelessness. We minister to about 80 individuals by providing a hot meal, hygiene items, a to-go bag of food, clothing, free raffle prizes, and a message from the Bible - all in a nice cool environment! During our program, we take time getting to know those we serve, encouraging them and hearing their stories. Recently Jeff, our Executive Director, was sitting at the table talking with Mo and George, two regular attenders who live in the community. They shared with him that they used to come to the kids programs 'Miss Mac' started back in the 1960's. They said she was like a mother to them, and how much they loved coming to the Fletcher Mission Center to be under her care.

After the program ended, Jeff invited Mo and George to come and check out the history wall in our office building. When they saw the giant photo of Mildred McWhorter (Miss Mac), they were reduced to tears as they relived fond memories of their time with her. They thanked God that 60 years later, MCH is still looking out for them and loving them with the same love that Miss Mac had for them. As George was leaving, Jeff asked him where his bike was, and he shared that it was recently stolen. So they went to our Fletcher facility where we have a supply of bicycles donated by Tamara Brooks' Re-Cycle ministry.

George picked out a bike from our supply, and as he was leaving, he was again brought to tears as he stopped to gives thanks to God. He said, "Miss Mac is in Heaven now, and she's still taking care of me!" All of the staff and volunteers at MCH are extremely grateful and privileged to continue the legacy of love and the wonderful foundation built by Miss Mac. To God be the glory!

Joyous Milestones

As the school year comes to an end and the summer quickly approaches, the celebrations for graduates are the norm. Whether it be from college, high school, middle school, etc., everyone celebrates alongside the graduates. At Joy Mission Center last month, we celebrated alongside the graduates from our Kids Club program. Laughter, happiness, and pure joy were some of the things we shared with the kids as they graduated to become new members of our youth club. We are so glad we've had the opportunity each week to teach and show the love that Jesus has for them. As they begin their journey in our youth club we'll continue to focus on helping them discover the wonderful plan God has for each of their lives. What a wonderful privilege it is!

Compassion Connections

This month the Compassion Center coordinated two outreaches for church youth groups that came to MCH for their summer mission trips. During the week we all traveled to southwest Houston to serve with our partner, Neighborhood Impact. During these outreach events, participants received training to help them understand poverty before engaging with the community.

Following their orientation, youth volunteers and their leaders went door-to-door to invite local families to a nearby soccer field for a day filled with games, a grill-out, and a time of community. During the event the group led a short time of worship, acted out a Bible story, and shared the gospel. These outreach events foster connections for our partner ministering to the community and spreads joy to immigrant families and children in need. They also provided a wonderful serving opportunity for the summer youth groups that came to serve with us.

Volunteer Spotlight

Serving Through All Generations

Mrs. Linda Fielder has been a volunteer with MCH for over 30 years. She began at our Fletcher Mission Center taking care of small children while parents attended ESL and Bible study classes. Over the years, Linda has also served in many other ministries through our Gano Center, including the Christmas Store, the homeless program, and making gifts for special occasions and holidays throughout the year.

Recently, Linda has been moved to include her grandkids in the ministries she loves so dearly. Last month her grandson Jackson helped her make up Fathers Day gifts to give to both the senior adults that we serve, and also our staff members. Jackson was not content with simply preparing all the gifts. He insisted on coming with Linda when she delivered them so he could present the gifts himself. What a wonderful surprise it was for all of us to see this youngster handing gifts to everyone and telling them, "Happy Fathers Day". The warm and engaging smile on his face was enough of a gift in itself! Thanks, Jackson, for making all of us feel extra special this year!

Donor Shout-Out!

Don Nichols

Don has been helping to keep our Mission Center buildings safe for years. Through his company, Alliance Safety, he does this by inspecting and servicing our fire extinguishers and kitchen fire suppression systems regularly. Over this past year, Don has blessed our mission work by sourcing donated goods that we use for our homeless, senior adult and Compassion Center ministries. Don has delivered to us hundreds of hygiene packs, various food items and other much needed supplies.

One of the most meaningful donations Don made recently was two boxes of brand new folding chairs - 40 total. We were able to share one of the boxes with a Compassion Center partner who needed extra chairs for outreach events his church holds every month. The chairs will be used to provide seating for attendees who will hear about the hope that Jesus can bring to their lives. Who would have thought that fire extinguisher maintenance could lead to reaching more people with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Thanks Don for your faithfulness and friendship!

We welcome cash and non-cash donations: Let us help you allocate a non-cash contribution, or click here to make a donation to help support the many ministries of MCH!
Thank you for your support and encouragement as we continue to meet the physical and spiritual needs of people living in Houston's inner city with the love, mercy and grace of Jesus Christ.
