Opening Prayer:

A prayer to remember the innocents

“We will always remember them”

Dear Lord, Almighty God, we pray for all Indigenous children who were in residential and boarding schools in Canada and the United States.  Some died there; we ask that you give assurance to their descendants that their souls are with you and their ancestors.  Some survived there; we ask that you give your healing grace to all who endured hardship while there and are still struggling with those memories.  Lastly, we ask you to help us guard our children against harm in this world.  All this we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.  Amen.

Resolution C032 from the 81st General Convention.

Province V Awarded $470,956 in Grants

Province V is excited to receive a number of Spring 2024 grant awards for provincial initiatives and books for fall’s Creation Care retreat. Please celebrate with us! If any of these topics are of interest to you, we are looking for volunteer team members to create and launch the initiatives. Contact provinceVcoordinator@gmail.com.

  • 2024 United Thank Offering Grant, $55,000

This grant will launch Province V’s new Engaging Gender Complexity (EGC) initiative. EGC will help individuals and worshiping communities create welcoming space for all people and will equip participants to welcome gender-diverse individuals into their community without causing harm to or undue emotional and psychological labor for them. Episcopalians are called by our baptismal vows to promote the dignity of every human being, counteracting historical and current traumas perpetuated on gender-diverse communities. Guided by trained facilitators, in-person gatherings will be a laboratory to learn more about gender-diversity and practice radical hospitality towards these individuals and communities. Faith communities informed about gender-diversity have the potential to be places of refuge, modeling this radical welcome to the wider world. See the full press release.

  • 2024 Constable Fund Grant, $30,000

Funds a two-course digital curriculum to inform, form, and transform individuals and communities concerning gender diversity and catalyze personal and communal efforts in line with General Convention’s Resolution D 030 “to welcome and support people and communities of diverse genders, including trans gender and non-binary.” The first course entitled Embracing Gender Diversity (EGD) will be administered through Bexley Seabury Seminary Federation's Pathways for Baptismal Living program. The second course, Facilitating EGD (FEGD),  will prepare facilitators to host in-person, in-depth conversations that grow from questions that are raised in the first course.

  • 2024 Becoming Beloved Community Impact Grant, $10,200

This grant will help create and disseminate the new Trafficking: Faithful Response and Support initiative, to be available for individuals and communities across the church. Leaders will learn more about human trafficking, including identifying the signs and responding to suspected trafficking. This program will also help communities of faith identify ways to support victims of trafficking as they work toward renewed life.

  • 2024 Church Periodical Club (CPC), $756

This grant will provide books to Province IV and V’s Creation Care Event in the fall . Province IV and Province V Creation Care Networks will jointly host this creation care retreat in the Diocese of Kentucky on September 12-15, 2024, with guest retreat leader Margaret Bullitt-Jonas of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts. Margaret is co-author of the book, Rooted and Rising, which will be provided to all participants. The Provinces are grateful for the CPC’s support as we continue to share ways of caring for all of creation. Visit https://revivingcreation.org to explore Margaret’s work.

  • 2024 Trinity Church’s Leadership Development Grant, $375,000

Over 3 years, this grant will fund Province V’s Campus Ministry Developer position to help communities that 1) serve or wish to serve institutions of higher education without campus ministers; 2) wish to actively support the work of their local embedded campus ministers, and/or 3) want to learn how to engage more authentically with young adults over all. Trinity Church’s Leadership Development Grant collaboratively addresses urgent gaps in leadership education with faith-driven mindsets and practical skills for the Church and for people in leadership roles outside the church, empowering them to achieve common goals.

Diocese of Wisconsin and soon-to-be Diocese of the Great Lakes!

Actions at General Convention will change the landscape of dioceses across Province V. Voting on the last day (and the signature of the Secretary) recreated The Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin. Because the state had previously been a diocese, when the Dioceses of Milwaukee, Fond du Lac, and Eau Claire agreed to come back together, we call it a reunion into the Diocese of Wisconsin, and this took effect immediately.

Another resolution will allow the Diocese of Eastern Michigan and the Diocese of Western Michigan to juncture into the Episcopal Diocese of the Great Lakes. While it has passed General Convention, the new diocese will be born when the gavel comes down at the diocesan convention in October. Find their new webpage in the October newsletter.

Watch for the Province V logo to shift over the next few months!

Creation Care Retreat

Spiritual Resilience in Days of Trouble

September 12-15, 2024

Nazareth, KY

Registration is open!

Schedule outline and retreat leader biographies are published here.

Love God, Love God's World has launched!!!

Check out this page for information and register your group to begin!

Love God, Love God’s World is a nine-session, film-based curriculum, ideal for Episcopalians anywhere on the journey with creation care and environmental ministry—from newcomers looking to take their first step to seasoned leaders seeking a transformative small-group experience.

Sessions have a similar structure to the popular Sacred Ground curriculum and include compelling films and readings, faith-based reflections, and discussion questions—each written by different contributors who draw from their own contexts and experiences. Participants will also discover ways to learn, pray, advocate, and conserve.

We hope everyone who participates in the curriculum becomes:

  • Comfortable speaking about their faith, care of creation, and climate change
  • Personally transformed and invited into different levels of personal and collective engagement on creation care and eco-justice
  • Confident about where to find creation care resources and information

The Creation Care Network of Province V will be hosting a group. For more information, contact Jeanette Ettin, convener.

The Brood: An Inclusive Ministry for Foster, Adoptive, and Kinship Families

Trafficking: Faithful Response and Support

Province V's new initiative to help inform people about and train people to fight trafficking is called "Trafficking: Faithful Support and Response" and is currently under development. We are looking for some team members to help with the development and sharing of this resource across the province and the church.

Here are some areas that we have identified:

- course creation - Total Life Wellness has the majority of the plan, but we will want some conversations with a team about things to make sure that we include

- document creation - what we need to have for handouts to church leaders

- “pilot” course - the first group to participate in a session - to help review and give feedback

Send an email to provinceVcoordinator@gmail.com if you would like to help with any of these pieces. If not your area of ministry or you are unable to help yet, please pray for this program's development and watch for additional information. We hope to launch the first session in the fall.

Engaging Gender Complexity

Thanks to the United Thank Offering and the Constable Fund, this new program will be developed to help individuals and churches create welcoming space for all people.

You are invited to be part of the process of developing and launching this new initiative! Please review the various options below.

1) Send an email to provinceVcoordinator@gmail.com with:

  • helpful resources you hope we will consult regarding either understanding gender or supporting/ allying around gender
  • stories about churches already doing a good job of welcoming all people (what have you chosen to do as a parish? Or, what has a church done that made you and yours feel welcomed?)

2) Volunteer to be part of the program development process by joining one of the following:

  • curriculum development team
  • Resource curation committee
  • Proofreading / curriculum review

3) Volunteer yourself or recommend someone else to be interviewed on video. We are looking for people who can speak to the following issues:

  • Experience identifying outside of the gender binary
  • Experience as a trans adult at any stage of transition
  • Experience as a family member or friend of gender nonconforming persons

4) Volunteer to be trained as a facilitator:  people trained to consult with worshipping communities to help them develop their local practices.

More information about this initiative will be included in upcoming newsletter!

From the Office of Government Relations:

Changing Immigration Conversations

The U.S. immigration system is in desperate need of reform, and the politics of immigration in the United States are troubling: anti-immigrant and dehumanizing rhetoric is increasing; Congress is unable to act; and the Administration is taking action to limit the rights of asylum seekers. Nearly half of Americans have said they would support mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, and religious groups that carry out a call to serve all of God’s children are being targeted for their care of the most vulnerable.

As followers of Christ, what do we do in such a moment?

In the Office of Government Relations, our focus is on engaging U.S. policymakers and legislators to advocate for the policy positions our church has instructed us to support. We seek to develop relationships with Congressional offices to better understand the possibilities for legislation. We share perspectives with Administration officials and urge them to put in place policies that are humane and compassionate. We offer ways for our Episcopal Public Policy Network members to be engaged.

Please read the full statement and engage in learn, take action, and engage in the congregation.

The retreat is open to all. It begins Monday, August 26th and ends Thursday, August 29th. To register or learn more, please visit: http://dekovencenter.org/summer-retreat-2024/

Thank you to DeKoven for sponsoring Big Provincial Gathering 2024!

EMM "Community Partners"

Episcopal Migration Ministry leaders are calling on provinces, dioceses, congregations, groups of individual Episcopalians, and EMM's friends and supporters to become EMM ‘community partners.’ By becoming an EMM community partner and assuming the responsibility of resettling refugee families and offering initial support upon their arrival, you can make an immediate and tangible impact. Your assistance will not only provide crucial aid to those in need but also pave the way for ongoing support and integration within our communities. There is federal funding associated with this program, which will complement private support like in-kind donations, volunteer time, and financial contributions.

Faith at the Crossroads - a young adult ministry

We are pleased to introduce Faith at the Crossroads, the newly re-launched young adult ministry, hosted by Trinity, Indianapolis and the Diocese of Indianapolis. Faith at the Crossroads is an intentional community of discernment, formation, service, and belonging for young adults, age 21 to 35.

There are three ways to be part of the community, with opportunities for each group to interact in intentional and meaningful ways:

  • Fellows: 11-month residency, with a stipend and robust support structure through Episcopal Service Corps.
  • Residents: 2-year residency, while completing school or working in the local nonprofit sector.
  • Neighbors: non-resident, joining Fellows and Residents for retreats, workshops, and events.

Enrollment as a Fellow or Resident is now open, with move-in dates beginning in August. Learn more on our website [CrossroadsCommunityIndy.org], and share this opportunity with people who may be eligible or interested.

Season of Creation Coming soon!

Creation Season begins on September 1. It gives us, as people of faith, a unique opportunity to pray what we believe, to learn what can be done for the precious creation of which we are a part, to act to reduce our burden on the Earth, and to advocate for just solutions – all for the love of God. This year, we invite your participation in new ways. As you make your way through the four pillars of this work, I pray that you will see something that stirs your imagination and lifts your heart. We need the moral imagination and prophetic power of religious leaders and communities as we lend our faith to the fight. God's creation is at risk. Every day must include consciousness of our interdependence with the rest of the natural world. May this intentional linking of the work to liturgical time be a blessing for your congregation. May we be a blessing for God's creation.

Many Episcopal bishops have given permission to use the Season of Creation materials. Review the website and check with your bishop about using these materials this fall.

The Episcopal Church also has resources as you plan.

Book Corner

An introduction to what scripture has to say about the dignity of LGBTQ people.

In this bible study, Episcopal priest and former teacher Margie Baker shows teens how the bible affirms and supports all of God’s beloved children. Beginning with an exploration of what it means to be made in God’s image and the ways that God is represented with a variety of male and female images and concluding with an examination of how love for all our siblings is central to God’s relationship with humanity, the study encourages youth to see how a thread of inclusion runs through the bible.

Each chapter of God, Gospel, and Gender includes an opening prayer, an activity, opportunities to delve into the biblical text, prompts to respond to the text, and a closing prayer. Designed for use by groups or individuals, this book calls youth to affirm the dignity in every person.

Survey seeks feedback from, about next generation of Episcopal leaders

Seeking to grow and strengthen The Episcopal Church’s ministries that support members of Generation Z, the Department of Faith Formation is launching a churchwide survey geared toward young people and those who serve them.

“The Episcopal Church Leadership Project: Toward a New Generation of Leaders” is a proposed three-phrase, three-year project to identify the gifts and challenges of ministry with and by Gen Z within the church; and to evaluate, revise, and test resources and practices to help ministers reach and support this generation of leaders.

Generation Z comprises those born between 1997 and 2012. The Faith Formation office works closely with Episcopal leaders of those in that age group through its youth ministriesyoung adult and campus ministries, and Episcopal Service Corps. As part of this project, it will also partner with many other Episcopal Church offices and ministries that engage with Gen Z.

Eye Witness Reports from the Border and Beyond

A Special Meeting of the Migration Ministry Network

With Silvia Huth and Martin Dickinson

July 16, 7:00 Central / 8:00 Eastern

Most of the time, we must rely on journalists for information about the current situation and conditions at the Mexican border and in the countries where many asylum-seekers and other migrants originate. This special meeting will provide an opportunity to hear from and talk with two eyewitnesses who have travelled to those locations and can give us first hand accounts of both the challenges and the hopeful developments they've seen.

Silvia Huth, is co-coordinator of the the Province V Migration Ministry Network. She will discuss a recent church mission trip to Guatemala, including what she observed about local conditions that are driving Guatemalens to seek safety and a better life elsewhere. Martin Dickinson is a leader of the sanctuary working group at the National Cathedral in Washington DC. Martin will describe his recent pilgrimage to the Rio Grande, where he met and worked with migrants waiting at a shelter in Mexico and also participated with a volunteer group greeting new arrivals at a remote desert camp just inside the US.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to hear direct and honest testimony about crucial migration issues. All are welcome.

Episcopal Asylum & Detention Ministry Network

Episcopal Migration Ministry hosts an Asylum and Detention Ministry Network that meets virtually on the fourth Wednesday of every month. The Ministry Network’s collaborative work and conversation focus on best practice-sharing in areas of direct service, organizing, advocacy actions, Christian formation and worship resources, and community education to protect asylum, promote humane and dignified alternatives to detention, and to support asylum seekers and those harmed by the immigration detention system. Learn more and register to attend meetings here.

Affiliated Organizations

There are a number of organizations affiliated with the Episcopal Church and working across Province V. These groups have a "structure" that is more organized than a network. They have resources and information that are useful in your local ministry contexts.

For a full list of Affiliated Organizations, visit the Province V website.
